View Full Version : Mixing Fuel

I was told today that if you have any OS engine and run Cool Power of any
nitro % it makes your warranty null and void because of the oil % in the
mix, apparently it has to be over 18% oil, my question is this then.....what
content of oil has cool power, and if you want to increase the oil % what
additive do you add? Also, is it worth faffing around mixing your own or can
you buy something just as good off the shelf?

I'd start with adding some more oil :-))

I'd have to agree with OS too, *I* wouldn't guarantee an engine if Foolpower
was being shoved through it.

It IS worth faffing about but then you discover that a simple fuel mix is
just as good (if not better) than any of the pre-mixes available.

I use Model Technics methanol and their own oil (it's called EDL for "Extra
Duty Lubricant" or some such). I never use less than 18% and usually 20%.
Nitro as needed (none for my engines coz I use Italian high compression
motors that don't like nitro)/

All available from Revolution models who'll mix it while you wait. They MAY
even ship it to you, but I've never had reason to find that out for sure.

Or you could just try Bekra fuel, which has 18% oil as standard, and is cheaper
than CoolPower to boot.......!

Oh yes, a genuine flag waving, blue blooded English glug, and I can vouch
for it too. Its nice! Oddly though whilst it looks a pretty pink in the
bottle it comes in, when pured into a heli's tank it looks like piss. And
piss after a night of curry and guiness too. What a pity.

I've heard that Bekra fuel is good Pete, but I've never tried it. One of
these days I will though.

Is that a quart or a half

I'll add that I mix my own fuel and NEVER mix more that 14% oil (Klotz)...
OS, YS or any other... I've never had an engine fail and certainly not
while under warranty. Really, think about it... You send an OS .70 in for
piston failure and what, OS will not warranty it because they think you
might have used Cool Power? As I said, while I mix my own fuel, I wouldn't
stop using fuel XYZ because of a warranty issue.

Here is Bill's simple fuel rule: If you run your engine slightly rich it
will last dam near forever.
.... and it's corollary: If you run your engine lean it will last a very
short period of time.

I've been flying models for 35+ years and the above rules have never failed
me. I should add I own over 300 engines some from the 70's that are still in
fine condition. I shamefully add that I've burned up one or two fine
engines in a few tanks of fuel.

It's about a gallon and half. Hospice is what it's called.

They didn't want to ship it to me when I asked a few weeks ago. I'll have to
get round to going to that neck of the woods some time soon ;-)

I asked them recently and it was collecton only. And the price was a
pretty penny more than Southern Modelcraft as well if I may say so.
