Hi all,

I started the construction of a 69" Brian Taylor P-51D. The thing is i want to install a retractable tailwheel that is steerable as wel.

What is the normal (if there is a normal) way to make it steerable?

In my opinion, just direct conection to the pushrods that are connected to the rudder isn't working, because of the retract mechanism.

Should i steer it with a seperate servo??

I allready purchased the "Robart #121 Scale Retract Tailwheel"

Anyone who can give me some advice on this one??

Thanks one forehand,

Appie

easy to do ; use pull -pull cables from the rudder servo to the tiller bar on the Robart retract some people use the Dubro 2-56 pull-pull kit or simply monofilament fish line 30# test use the inner holes on the servo so you don't overcontrol.
good luck with your project

Appie, the unit Taylor shows on his plans is reported to work very well and is easy to build.

Another way to do it would be to put collets on either side of the "tail wheel" servo control rod with springs between the collets and an "E-Z connector." This way the servo can still move but the springs absorb any slop or shock to the wheel.

I have always liked the way Gene Barton did his; with an old Goldberg nose wheel retract. Other nose wheel retracts would work as well. Some of the prices on scale p-51 retractable tail wheels are ridiculous!
