Hi. My first time here on 1/2A. Just found it browsing along.
Can any one recommend a good 1/2A pattern , 3D plane a full 4 channel. I have a 0.074 Norvel. What is the largest prop that one can run on it for 3D ? Any one converted Switchback or Tantrum to 074 Norvel.
The resaon I am requesting assistance is although I do fly electric, but the Brush less combos are out for me with Lipo's costing well over $200 just for power.
I want to get back to 1/2A gas which I left a few yeras ago for the speed 400.
PS : Flew the aeorbatic ACE Simple 400 in electric but it can take 074 per the plans. True, all ACe planes like to fly fast or the tip stall is quite regular. So I want to stay away from ACE Simple series.
Thanks for your input in advance.

i plan on coverting a Todds Models Attitude or Stevens Aero Groove 480
the groove would be the more patternish of both, while the attitude would be alot bettwe for 3d.

let's see:
$70.00 ish for kokam 1500's
$120.00 brushless motor
$135.00 ESC for brushless
$200.00 LiPoly charger.
We are however in the 1/2A forum.
I've talked with the guy's at Hobby Hanger (http://www.hobbyhangar.com/) I had their Mini Edge 540 (http://www.hobbyhangar.com/test/hgr190.htm) and flew it with both a Norvel 0.061. It's a very good flying plane. The guy's at Hobby Hanger said that they liked it best with the Norvel 0.074 out of all the prototype's that they did.
Don't know how well it'll "3D" Maybe you could make the controls bigger?

Sportsflyer, if you are willing to scratchbuild, you are welcome to download the plans to my Half-Wit.
The Half-Wit is a Half-A (OK, its powered by a .061 so its a little bigger than true half-a) 3D profile airplane. It is fully 3D capable from hovering to harriering, etc. It does excellent knife edges (even high alpha), waterfalls, blenders etc.
The design is simple and quick to build and I think you would have a lot of fun with it. I don't think it would be a problem to build one for a .074 (just move the battery to make the CG right)
Below is the link to the plans
http://www.geocities.com/matchlessaero/halfwit.html
and the plans are in PDF (thanks bipeflyer), DXF and DWG.

I down loaded the plans and in one evening I have the plane built. It is very quick to build. I have a Hornet sitting there waiting to be run. I have 3 of the Ciruss 9 gram servos wanting a place to go so it looks like I just need more memory slot and Rx's and it will be in the air soon.

I have not been here for a while. But I want to say thanks to all of you. Hello Matchlessaero. Thanks for the design. Thankyou very much Looks great. I will print and build it. Looks great. What Prop did you use on that Half Wit ? Did 7x4 do any justice or plain old 6X3 ?
Hello Air Mover. The reason it is 200 bucks, well you know, the BL motor, BL Ctrl, Kokams and do not forget the charger. Anyways. You have great airplanes on the park flyer forum. Really great. You had one posted on 3D forum as aerobatic. Will it take GWS 350 D gearing and 2S 1500 kokam ? Let me know. I am very interested. But do not want to invest in new power plant again and gain.
Cheers to all.

SportsFlyer, I really think you will enjoy it. I am happy to say that since I posted this thing, I have gotten replies from over 20+ people who have built or are building this little plane. All the built planes under 14 ozs are flying very well.
As for props, I tried the little cox 5-3 and it just spun with no bite for hovering, and I had the same experience with the APC 5.7-3. The Cox 6-3 ended up being the optimum prop of all that I have tried, and it helps that it is almost unbreakable(believe me I have tried:D ) I think the 7-4 would be a bit much for this motor to turn, but it can't hurt to try.

Try the wattage tangent, has a fiberglass F3A like fuselage, yet you will have to either glass or monokote wing and tail feathers, I will change my tail feathers to balsa(they are foam), will put a norvel.074 on it

You mentioned pattern?
I think the GWS Formosa would fit the bill perfectly...
You could sell the motor/gearbox and drop the price even more...
