worked a little better for me, somehow

Awesome video, and what an advertisement. I loved the lightning and the rainbow! This makes me all the more jealous to be living here in Connecticut where the only sloping is during winter Northwest winds at the shoreline. Brrrrr!

Sorry about that. The link changed last night and I forgot to update this post. All is well now.

Great video!

Just FYI, the link at the top of the thread works but the link off http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/index.php?topic=air-sail
does not.

The only problem I had with the video was that it made me bummed that I live in the flatlands of Illinois. :(

The sound of some of those planes zipping by is intoxicating. I loved it.

MItch... go find you a nice pointy Dam and wait for some wind, heck find several and then you can fly almost every day. I found several here in Texas, where it dont get any flatter.... lots of Good energy, the pointier it is, the better. i.e: narrow at the top.

I don't know about Texas or Illinois, but here in the Connecticut the sloping is generally lousy. The wind is gusty, there are trees everywhere to disturb a nice smooth airflow, and when it is windy it is darn cold!

(today it is blowing 15-25 out of the NW - perfect sloping conditions except it is 40 degrees outside. Wind chill?)

Well,

if you find a damn, and fly when the wind is coming off the water, it will be smoothe.. or smoother at least... Also, when you fly on the backside, you can stand where you arent in the wind :)

Actually, we have a decent slope site nearby at an old landfill. But, that mountain and oceanside sloping in the video is just spectacular and makes me envious.

Ive been out to SoCal, I flew parker and DS-ed the South Ridge at Torrie Pines. Let me tell you, when you find the right place, it will be just as fun as if you were there. In fact, Ive had more fun at the local dam DS-ing than I had at either Torri or Parker. BUt Parker was INSANE BIG. No you wont set a speed record at a dam, but you can sure blow your own mind.

I live in Dekalb. I have returned to R/C after about 25 years.
To get some skills back I'm play with a Hobbyzone Outlaw
and have bought a GQS E-Starter. However gliders/ sailplanes is
what i really wish to get into. I have a million questions. Would you mind emailing me at StCalvin57@aol.com? It would be worth me buying you lunch to pick your brain.

Mitch:

I too live in Naperville. I guess you haven't tried sloping at Green Valley at 75th Street and Rte 53. It just closed for the season, but I had some great sloping there this season.

BTW, are you a member of SOAR?

Wow!!! thanks for sharing that Paul! I have always heard that your videos were worth buying, and now Im sure of it. Perhaps I will have to put a few of them on my christmas list. Im suprised people here seem disturbed that its a sort of advertisement. Personally, Im just thankfull that you shared some of your amazing footage with us for free! So thanks for that. Makes me wish I lived close to a big slope.

Thanks for all the nice compliments. 2000 hits and counting! Ya Baby!!

You guys have to see the DVD version on a big plasma screen with a nice sound system. Rock and Roll soaring!

I will be working with Jim Bourke to bring you and the Lift Zone more online videos like this. I have about 100 hours of footage in the vaults and I will share it as I can.

Well, its back to the Mac to put the finishing touches on 'Just Want To Fly 2' which will be out shortly.

I enjoyed the "just want to fly" video preview and I put the DVD on my christmas list... my favorite shot was the sailplane in the high speed turn crack up in midair... it makes a unique sound when its wing snaps in two. This is the actual reason that I'm posting, because I have a roommate that thinks that the "crack" sound of the sailplane isn't real, he thinks it was "added in" by the maker of the film in order to make it more exciting. He also doesn't believe that the "swooshing" sounds as the planes do fly-bys is real. I told him he was crazy and I would mail the creator of the film and ASK him if he "added sound effects" and my friend said that he thought the film director would _lie_ and say that he didn't use sound effects, because he was using them to make his film more appealing. This made me mad so I decided to refute is argument I would seek expert testimony from independent sources, and the only place I could think to solicit qualified opinions is on this message board. Has anyone actually seen a sailplane explode from stresses in a high-g turn? Can they reply or email me and describe how loud it was? Or if people that have seen the film remember the shot of the plane cracking up (it's at time 4:34) does it appear to be actual audio recording of the plane's destruction? Please help!

hmmm, a hollow stressed structure with a tight covering skin of some type, not making a noise, must be like how a drum doesn't make any noise either. The cracks sounded very similiar to the ones I heard as I demolished my planes in similiar ways. Just go out to the local flying field and listen to them, especially a larger glider making a high speed pass.:D cooool!!!!!
Pual has captured several of these breakups on his vids and they are exciting. His videos bring the slope to your TV and are even better with a sound system. Indeed he has captured some awesome sights and sounds, well worth getting!!

Paul may or may not answer but as a former video editor (and having watched just about all of Paul's videos) I can say that you both are probably right.

#1 - when a plane explodes in a DS turn, THAT is what it sounds like. Only it's much more gut-wrenching in person.

#2 - video editing is all about affect and effect. You want the viewer to get the message as strongly as possible so if you have to crank the audio a little here or compress a time sequence there in order to get the essence of the scene, you do it. I believe Paul does that - if he didn't he wouldn't be a professional.

It does really sound like that for the most part. Bear in mind that if you have a really good mic on your video camera, you can actually isolate the sounds much more so then your own ears do.

My friend Andy shot the video of Kyle Paulson and Doug Reel's recording breaking DS flight. I was there when he shot it, and saw the video afterwards. It definitely sounded louder on the video, but I think that's just because the somewhat directional mic is able to filter out the wind noise that would normally be whistiling around your ears at the slope. There's no editing trickery needed though.

As for the crack when a plane blows up, I too have a hard time understanding why anyone wouldn't believe that. These are very strong composite structures stressed at 20-40g's and failing pretty much instantaneously. Think of the amount of energy there. How does he expect it to sound???

OTOH, there's been times I've been on the hill when there's been folks watching who have never seen a glider. When I do a fast flyby, they seem really amazed that you can actually hear the woosh noise. I guess if you've never seen a fast glider in real life at all, you might be sceptical.

thanks bjafee, ncd3dg, and reed, for the input. I figured my friend was an idiot but really wanted to seek 3rd-party expert input. This is one of the reasons I always visit this website! I'm probably going to get "just want to fly 2" for christmas, and I'm also getting one of those new hotliners, "Sprinter XL" if anyone has seen it. I'd like to review it for the forums, if anyone has tips on this can you please email me at trashmanf@hotmail.com? It's my first sailplane :-)

I bought the "Just Want To Fly 2" but I am a sort of disappointed.
The first section is about the real glider thing but it is soooo long and only one "camera view". If there were some view inside the glider, it may be better. Nothing about the RC stuff in the first part.
The second part is a little better, but for the DS part, I already saw it from a website which I think is totally the same.
I also bought another video which is "secret of thermal soaring", I think this one is way better.

If you haven't already, check out Paul's "Endless Lift 2." Its about 90% slope gliding (which a bit of thermal and hand launch thrown in).

EL2 is still one of my favorites, along with Dave Reese's "Lift Ticket" and Marty Crosley's DS-fest/slope-o-rama video.

Hey guys, I am listening..........

Usually the DS sounds are even more dramatic in person then what's captured on video. I do not fake the sounds though a small volume pump for dramatic effect may be called for. As for the cracks or explosions, they are far louder in person! Thats a lot of energy releasing.

I have about 2 hours of really good audio I recorded at the Cape Blanco DS fest. I used a very high end Sony stereo mic (same kind they use for movie sound capture) recorded straight to digital audio tape. I synced some of those captures to the video of ds runs featured in Just Want To Fly 1. Some of the Just Fly DVD menues have some of the sounds mixed it the background. Very nice on head phones with the volume cranked up.

Every film I make is a new learning experience. I try to give you guys the most interesting soaring content I can, and some of that might just be full scale stuff. Different guys like different stuff. A guy just mailed me about how much HATES to watch any kind of DS flying. I do my best with very limited filming/production budgets.

Thanks for the comments. I am available to answer any questions you might have about any of my films. Mail me at paul@radiocarbonart.com

Yeah, maybe I should order the EL2... it sounds more like what I want.

Paul, I am not trying to offend you for the JWtF2. That's the comments I have. By the way, the Secret of thermal really helps a lot. Which I appreciate it.

Endless Lift 2 has some pretty classic sloping stuff including Dan Peterson and Charlie Richardson ripping Torrey like no one has since. The video is not quite the same quality as my later DV stuff but the flying speaks for its self.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome! Thats the only way I can make better products.

BTW, if you want to know what a stock Opus V sounds like when going about 150mph, see the short clip where Andy says "vibrational flutterage" as the plane goes past.

That plane didn't survive that particular day (I know, because it was mine).

That was...............yeah!:D

Another flatlander that would love to slope, I just don't know where to go yet.:(

I'm thinking I'll go micro, so I won't need much of a slope.
