When building a airplane for the Norvel.
What do you guy's figure would be a max weight?
this can obviously vary depending on the performance desired.
I'm looking at Edge / Extra / Cap and enough power for good vertical lines, not necessarily hovering and 3D. But good sport flying aerobatics.
Can it creep up to 20 oz or should I make every effort to keep it under a pound?

It depends on your wing area. The Wattage Cap, Giles, and Extra will fly with a .061.at 20 ozs. The Ace simple Extra has a much smaller wing so it needs to be 16oz or less.

Yes it does I flew it in the Hobby Hanger Edge-540 (http://www.hobbyhangar.com/test/hgr190.htm) after manty repairs, and a switch to a OS-10 it was flying at 31 oz's full throttle don't dare slow down.
I'm thinking of trying it again, with the Norvel 0.061 lighter of course.
Or getting a match to the one that I've got and doing a Guillows P-38.
I would think that a pair would provide enough power at all the way up to 30ish oz. But here for the wing area, it should probably be keep closer to 20.

I can see how your Edge would fly like a brick at 31 ozs. I looked at the website and see that the weight should be 19 - 24 oz. I would say the .061 would be maxed out flying at 19ozs.

My extra 230 with a .074 and 4ch micro gear came up to 19oz. This is with all kit stuff. If I was to do it again with lighter wood, slightly modified design and maybe even built up wings, I'm sure I can shave off 2-3 ounces! But even with the weight off, I'm for certain it will still have to fly bloody fast to fly level due to the small wing(as mentioned above).

What I still think would be the best bet right now for a good 1/2a aerobatic plane is an E to G("N") conversion of a mountain models kit. I'd do it myself but got no time yet(an am hoping for someone to do it soon and give us a report on it!). The suggested weight of such models are around 8-9oz with no batteries; and estimated 12-14 oz with batteries. If you equiped it with a small norvel(061 or 074) and a 1-2oz fuel tank, it would still weight less than an electric setup! It should be able to fly very slow and with high content nitro and the right prop, I think it will hover too.

31 oz was with the OS-10 after a good throw it would sorta sag and sink untill it got some speed up. then once it was going good and fast is was OK you could really see it mushing/sinking in turns. It has become an organ donor for a .19 powerd SPA3D for now.
I might just get a mate for my Norvel, and try a Guillow's P-38 as twins sound so  I would think that 2 0.061's should fly a P-38 up to maybe 24oz without any problem?

You have a lot more nerve than me to fly a small twin. It's all I can do to fly a small fast airplane with one engine.
The Cessna Sky Master is a push-pull twin that would be easy to work with.

Me too. I'm always biting off more than I can chew.

For now I'm thinking of trying Mike Molt's (aka KSU Flyer) P-38 over in the parkflyers forum, with the little electric motors.
Or the Guillow's kit, with a pair of Norvels.
The P-38 is just   Not sure yet
A couple of guy's in the club have twins. They sound sooo  cool:cool:

Many years ago, I did up an exact scale Ugly Stik to 240 squares and 14 ounces. Originally, it had a VA .049 with a 5.5 X 2 prop turing 22K or so. Performance was quite good. After a few repairs the weight crept up to 16 ounces so I installed a Norvel .061. At 19K and a 6 X 3 black Tornado prop, perfromance can only be described as spectacular. Hovering and unlimited verticals were the norm as were touch and go loops.

"Were" is the operative word. Wing is OK, need to build a new fuse and tail. Will try to make it even lighter.

The Stik can be seen in the May 97 issue of Flying Models on page 51.

I built a Sig Hummer with Norvel AME .061. It has 220 sq. in. and weighs 15.5 oz. With crank case preasure, a 5.5/4 prop and no muffler its fast and has good vertical. I lightend it up some places and I am afriad made it heavier others.I trimmed down the fuselage for my small radio, but I added a 2 oz. tank, shear webs and larger ailerons. With the norvel it needs the shear webs.I also dumped the gear and put the wing on top of the fuselage for grass and weedy feilds. Ive had a couple of hummers with TeeDees and they flew good, but the first time I flew it with the Norvel I was shocked by the performance.
