Is there a "decent" ARTF Spitfire out there - I have promised myself one for Christmas but as yet I cant find anything that even remotely looks the part!

Also in my loft I have a very old - 18 years- Mick Reeves Spitfire kit - Anybody any experience of building / flying this kit?

World Models has a Spitfire. Also a German company called Jamara has a Spitfire, I have one of the Corsairs from them and it is very nicely built. I think you can find them at www.jamara.de. The Spitfire they have is from there Q.S. line and is a 60 size and has a 66" span. The shipping on these models is about $30.00 but it is still worth the it because the model is less money than anything already imported. Also it takes about three weeks to get here from Germany but is worth the wait. My 60 size Corsair was only $160.00 delivered, kinda hard to beat that.
The Mick Reeves kit is a nice plane and flies well if built right. It may be worth more than you think, or at least highly sought after by guys who have had them.

I'm in the much the same position. Like you, I'm hankering after a nice big Spitfire - with a 4-stroke engine!

I've beenm looking at the Flair ARTF. Flair in UK are well known for their superb kits and while they dont manufacture the ARTF's themselves, they do select and support them..

Take a look at http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/ss16/index.shtml

I believe this model will be the subject of a review in the December edition of RCM&E (UK).

I have decided to sort out my Mick Reeves Kit & so I now have a few questions:

Should I use mechanical or air retracts & which ones
Should I use a 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine - Already have an Irvine 51 which I could use
What is the best way of covering & painting?

Brobin If you decide to go with the jamara kits be vary wary we tested the jamara FW190 with an magnum 0.15ci it was one of those planes you would give your worst enemy tip stalling all over the place, even the europeans hated it! on furthur investigation we found wash in, and the other wing and washout, a friend built a new set of wings and it was a lovley flyer. We contacted some friends across the water in Europe they had experienced the same problem with their kits. This WAS a problem with ALL Jamara fW190 kits I think they have since sorted it. J

brobin, take a look at Hacker Spitfire its 1/7 scale- nice ARTF(Supermarine Mk.IX with the pointy tail)

It comes as a ARC kit with moulded fuse, stab and rudder and fully sheeted foam wings. It comes in two versions 1) fixed landing gear or 2) pre-cut wells for retracts. It's for a .60 to .90 2c engine range.

It flies very well (see RC Model World September 2001 and RC Scale International September/October 2002)
I have just started to build one myself.

To look the part it needs some (minor) mods, i am adding flaps, changing the exhausts (the originals are crap) and adding some detail

I heard that KYOSHO's had a structural problem with the tail, something about breaking in mid air, this is a rumor that I've heard about here and on the airfields. Someone out there with more information?

No problems with "breaking in mid air" (whatever that means) on my Kyosho Spit. It is still one of my favorite planes - even after flying it for two seasons. It has a fairly high wing loading and therefore tends to land best at a higher speed than most sport fliers are used to, but it flies well. Long, stretched out 2-wheel landings with the tail slowly settling in is a favorite maneuver. It is a high quality ARF that takes only a few hours to get airborne with a low-cost .46 and standard radio gear.

CM Pro Spit is pretty decent and flies great:

The landing gear retracts outward in a scale manner.
