Anything about model Hovercraft on this NG?

The few model hovercraft I've seen lacked in performance. Though I haven't
delved into it, they struck me as having too much drag for the available
power/thrust. A good old fashioned air boat/swamp buggy is a lot more fun.

RCM&E did an article on a 23cc powered hovercraft recently. Very powerful,
very quick. No messing about. About three feet long IIRC.

Go to this web site

http://www.model-hovercraft.com/

I built a 3" x 4" R/C hovercraft as an experiment.
It was out of Balsa and a shopping bag

See this Micro R/c page for info on TTtim's build up,
and my duplication.

Missed that one. Maybe someone is finally getting the proper power to them.

This thing was superb! Very powerful, very fast. Very tempting too.

Click on this link:

The first site, http://www.remote-control-hovercraft.com/ makes a pretty
fast one in Oz.

Or you could try:
http://www.alltheweb.com/search?avkw=fogg&cat=web&cs=utf-8&q=model+hovercraft&_sb_lang=pref
and get a pretty long world-wide list.

These sort of searches are ones that goggle seems to fall down badly on.

Cheers,

design for th griffon on this site www.model-hovercraft.com the best site
ive seen and it runs on 2 speed 600 motors 1 for down thrust 1 for forward

it and it'll spin around a couple of times.

I had a go at an electric hovercraft (from parts lying around after
making other models). It's all scratch-built.

It works pretty well, but the logistics were a nightmare (such as
making the skirt, bonding plastic sheet, and so on).

I used two fast electric aeroplane engines. One for horizontal and one
for vertical thrust.

I wouldn't put the model forward as an example to others, by any
stretch of the imagination, but you can see the results on my homepage
at www.shilbo.com.

Good luck to anyone who has a go at something similar.

Hi, just read some of the mail here.
i've built a hovercraft from scratch, its sort of based on plans for a tdx 2000 i found while on the net. I was looking for heliicopters at the time and came across model hovercraft by accident and thought to myself, that sounds a lot more fun than a plane or copter. so i found a set of plans done by a guy called Mark Porter, printed them out and off I set to build it.
I soon found out theres more to them than i thought, even though they are quite easy to build, the propulsion duct proved to be the hardest bit for me, as it is 0.4mm ply wrapped in a circle, with little cuts of leading edge and more ply to wrap round the outside( that was the hardest bit.) it drove me mad for hours as it kept popping appart:mad: but finnaly i got it done:D .
I also found that mark's plans didnt include a plan for the main cabin and engine room, so had to make do with looking at pics of other craft and coming up with somthing that resemles a paseenger carrying craft.
all i need now is a four channel Tx and receiver and its going.I have managed to get it going using an rc7.2v battery, but cause it is running 2 electric motors it last about 1min:( .
I'm looking forward to getting it going properly and even try it down the local seashore:D .
If i can work out how to post a piccy of it I will at some point.
:D

Interesting to see this thread.... seems that RC hovercraft's don't tend to command the same level of interest as other land vehicles.

I'm a complete RC modeller newbie, but have decided to go for a Hovercraft as my first kit as it seemed a great way to get something that has the advantages of being able to work on land and water as well as being great fun!

After a lot of research and lurking on these forums I have decided to go for the US Army Sk5 Hovercraft off the http://www.hovercraftmodels.com site.

Does anyone have any experience of this kit? It uses 2 400 size electric motors - one for lift and one for thrust. I am planning on going for a 4 channel setup (forward and reverse thrust and controllable lift), but still need to get the RC equipment.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good quality 4 channel RC transmitter available in the UK for this kind of application? I would prefer to stick with one of the well known brands such as Futaba or Hitec, but the choice is pretty bewildering. links to good online sites stocking RC equipment would also be welcome - I need to suss out prices etc.....

Cheers,

Chris

Well I don't know of any UK online dealers, however
you can use this site to make your price comparisons.

http://www.towerhobbies.com/

I'm sure that tarrifs would make ordering from them somewhat prohibitive.

Thanks for the link - useful to see what is available for when I go looking :) .

SK5 kit should arrive in the next few days :D.

Also looks like a UK supplier (http://www.pandanmodelboats.co.uk) might start to stock the full range of kits from hovercraftmodels.com "early in the new year"...... They are not far from where I live, so can hopefully provide advice / RC equipment suitable for hovercrafts.

Cheers,

Chris
