Shouldn't there be at least two?

Take the receiver and move it. Try your reciver in his truck. Try your
motor in his truck. Twist the wires leading from the ESC to the motor.
Reset the ESC.

dg....I had a glitching prob yesterday. I was having glitching because
the RX and TX crystals didn't match the handheld radio I was using.

So....make sure both your buddy's crystals match his radio and match
each other.

BTW...you never mentioned if this glitchy truck worked well with the
exact same gear installed years ago.
