View Full Version : My 1st SPA3D = Too much fun!

I finished up my first SPA3D and now have a total of 4 flights on it. This is just way too fun to be legal! I had to replace the motor mount after intentionally dumping it to avoid hitting a pipe fence. I am flying this thing in my yard where I used to practice hovering heli's. When I cut out the new mount, I drilled 3/64" holes in the corners of the cut-outs to avoid the sharp stress points caused by sawing all the way into the corners. I have noticed that this thing is hard to fly when I am giggling like a school girl! I should get over that soon and get down to the task at hand of learning to fly some serious 3D below eye level.
For everyone who is wondering what the fuss is all about with these SPA3D airplanes, I think I can best sum it up by saying that this is the first airplane I have had that is extremely fun to fly and has absolutely ZERO EDF (Emotional Debt Factor). I can dork this thing time after time, re-start it and go fly again! It may require the occasional prop change or other minor repair, but repairs on this thing are dirt cheap if required at all!
Note to Gordo-plast... I, too, am working on a signature move, but you will have to wait to see it. I haven't perfected it yet, but I'm getting there.
My only complaint... I am going to burn a serious amount of fuel through this thing! But then again, I could use gallons of practice!

Besides that, how do you like the plane? :)

It's a nice looking one. You do good work. I like the yellow coro. White is good too. Easy to find in the weeds :)

I've arranged for the day off Friday, but can't decide which SPA3D to take to the field. The stardard 36" or the mini-30"..?..
Heck, I'll just throw them both in the car!

This summer I found a way to carry two SPA3Ds (or a SPA3D and QHOR) in one hand.
Just put them belly-to-belly and hook one LG over the other.
(It's about 400 yards from parking to the field).

Looks great man. You know, that's a very Yellow plane! I'm actually hurt that you maidened that thing w/o me man. Just kidding, will I see you Sunday? We're gonna hover from about 2PM til after dark.

So I'm thinking you're already designing the SPA3D built around the G-38?

Plans are to add a little blue trim to the fuse, just haven't got that far yet. The maiden flights were done at my house, I haven't made it to the field since the fun fly!
We were out of town this weekend (Springfield, MO) for a family getaway. I'm back on day shift now but won't be able to make it to the flying field until Friday at the earliest. I am celebrating my 30th birthday for the 12 time this Thursday and there's a Lone Star steak calling my name!
The G-38 has been sold for awhile now but there is still that 3W60 in the Pitts...hmmmmmmmm.

I may be growing older physically, but mentally I'm still tarp as a shack!

Oh man, you really missed it today. I logged 17 flights on the SPA3D! All kinds of new stuff. And I found out the 11x4 MAS and APC are both very strong!!! We missed you!!! But I know the wife wanted some of your time too!

Gordo-
Have to admit it was interesting to see your plane fly today. So when are you going to perfect the flat-spin-takeoff?

Stik is gluing up as we speak!
