I like the Simple Extra but decided it needs more wing area so it would not tip stall so easily. I may have built mine a little heavy anyway. I had a new foam core wing ready to replace the small Ace wing, but before I got it installed I had an idea. I was looking at the wing from my Wattage Giles G202 and thought to myself this will fit the Extra. The Giles was a great flyer with a Norvel .074 but had crashed on its third flight.
Anyway here is what it looks like before covering and I should have it covered this weekend. It may look like the wing is to far forward but the CG is way back... 3 inches from the leading edge. The firewall from the Giles was epoxied on and it will have the cowl also.
I got the fuse covered today and hope to finish the wing tonight.
If it flys as good as it did as a Giles I will be more than happy with this plane. I know this is a little far out but I can't wait to see it fly.
thanks, Lynn

Lynn,

Giles crashed on third flight? What happened? Tip stall? Stretched glide?

Andy,
Just a dumb pilot error.
I was still getting used to flying the plane and had it going full throttle for the first time. I was bringing the plane around the airfield for a low pass for my daughter to take a picture. The sun was low in the sky and I flew right in front of it. I didn't have on my sunglasses because the sun had been behind the clouds. I lost it in the sun and when it came out it was inverted and in a dive. I didn't have time to respond. I must have moved the right stick when it was in the sun. I was so involved in flying the plane I forgot about the sun which had just came from behind the clouds. If I had my sunglasses on I don't think I would have lost it.
Anyway, the lesson is wear your sunglasses.
It was fun while it lasted. I hope the Extra-Giles plane does as well.

Lynn,

That's a shame. Was this a developed flying site,,, club field?

In any event, the Giles wing looks right at home on the Extra fuse. Ought to fly better, more area, less wing loading. Good luck.

Yeah, that's bad about the Giles, sorry to hear that.

On the other hand, the "Giles 230" looks good so far. Let us know how it flies when you get it in the air.

Andy,
I was flying at the county airport. I had the whole place to myself..no other planes around. This airport was very busy ten years ago because of a large flight school....the school went out of business and now it is used very little.
I got the wing covered and need to add some trim then I will be ready to install the engine and radio.
Lynn

Keith,
I guess I will have to call this the Extra-Giles 432 (202+230):D

Looks good! The cowl could stand to be a bit smaller though... :)

Let us know how it flies, and good luck!

Like I said it is a little "far out" with the wide cowl and skinny fuse...one advantage to that is I was able to make two large vents at the rear of the cowl on the firewall(one on each side). It should get excellent flow through ventilation. I hope it flys as well as the Giles. I will let you know what happens this weekend. :)

It flew great! ...just about as well as the Wattage Giles.
I didn't have to adjust the trim any.... balance was right on the mark with a 250 mah battery in the nose.
I'm using a 3 channel Futaba radio and have no rudder control so the take offs were about 45 degrees to the left. I may add a tailwheel and hook it up to an aileron. I need some practice on my landings but overall it was a lot of fun to fly this plane... amazing what a difference a wing makes. :D

Here is a picture after the first flight....

another picture... I know the cowl is off a little... I was making it center around the prop shaft and didn't notice it was tilted to the left.
