I have a Dazzler (my second plane after a trainer). Having engine problems (I have 3 .40s with problems and an reliable Irvine 53). Would the .53 be too large for the Dazzler, it will physically fit.

Anyone else had the nose break off of one of these? Anyone tried the G2 add-on Dazzler - if so what do you think>

You can put the .53 on, but you'll have to reinforce the firewall, landing gear, and other things...

Thanks - Have already had to do this things due to nose breaking off! Have replaced the wire undercarriage with a fibreglass one.

well, if you have to do that for the 53, I guess you will have to do that for the 40 size engines too.
The 53 sits in a 40 size case. Very nice and strong motor. I like the Irvines a lot. Soooo reliable and soooo strong. :D It should give you unlimited vertical on this plane.
I do not own a dazzler, but I would suggest that you check all glue joins anyway and maybe add some balsa triangle stock behind the firewall (can't hurt on any plane). The landing gear shouldn't have to do nothing with your engine choice, but maybe needs reinforcement ( it is a weak spot on a lot of ARF's). Check for weak spots around the plane (you should do that to any plane btw), and take appropriate reinforcements. Have in mind the weight penalty that could exist if adding ply or other mods.
Just my $0.02

That's what I meant, Ulf.... The firewall needs to be reinforced and the landing gear as well.

So, what did I say?

Can anyone comment on using HS-81 servos in the wings on this bird. I have a boat load of them with no home and figure one for each aileron should be sufficient. I plan to build light and keep the wing loading down as much as possible.
Thanks

A .53 is a better choice for the Dazzler than the .40. My own Dazzler is the ARF variety and is disappointingly heavy. An OS .46 SF could not haul that heavy airframe to the level of power I expected. One built from the kit can come out significantly lighter.

The HS81 servos are very adequate for the ailerons, the more so because the Dazzler is not a speed plane, best configured with a large prop with low pitch (although there is a clearance problem at 11 ") for lots of thrust and lower speed.

Watch the landings, the landing gear makes it very bouncy. Be very careful on the first few flights and use minimum throw on elevator and more specifically ailerons, they are large and very responsive.

And last, the Dazzler is definitely not a good second plane after a trainer. Anyone with limited flying time should be helped by a buddy until sure he can handle it.

Anyone have input on the lightest covering material that will still be adequate for the Dazzler? I have used only So-Lite as of yet and love to keep things as light as possible.

Got my Ultracote in transparent green and white. Gonna do something along the lines of the E3D scheme I think. Gonna build her as light as I can afford to and maybe rework the gear for something more rugged. Finished the tail feathers last night and will be moving on to the fuse next I think. These slimer kits aint got nothing on the park flyer laser cuts.

I finally got some progress on the Dazzler. Wings and tail feathers are framed up and I'm on the fuse. A lot bigger than my electrics. Gonna have to steal the Wifes van from now on to go to the field.

Keep up the good work. I am real curious about your final weight. What engine are you planning to use for it?

I just had a problem couple of weeks ago with my ARF Dazzler. No damage actually happened, but after a few hot runs, i noticed an unusual sound coming from it. Close inspection revealed one side of the motor mount was broken. Luckily i had an identical spare on hand, but i'll keep a close watch from now on for these casted metal motor mounts.

I plan on using a .42 on it only because I got it free from someone. It runs fine as far as I can tell. I am kinda new to the glow thing. Last glow engine I had was back in 1980 or so. I am trying to keep my AUW as low as possible. Smaller servos on the ailerons, flight pack, etc.

Finally used some recovery time from surgery to get some work done on the Dazzler. Hope to get it out this weekend but I'm slow on the build for this one for some reason. Nothing special on the color scheme but here she is.

Finally finished it. Took me waaaay too long to build this thing. Anyway, here she is with my two favorite ladies.

Looks very nice. Flown it yet? AUW (with what engine) ?

Sorry to say I have not flown it yet. Been busy with the career thing and weather has been stinking lately too. Don't know final weight yet either. Don't have scale that goes this high. I hope to fly it in a couple weeks if not tomorrow. I'll post if I do get a chance.

I do fly my Dazzler with a 53 Irvine : unlimited power. I just had to reinforce the firewall after a crash with fiberglass. The flight is very quiet because you do not need to push the engine and if you do the plane disappears very quickly !
