View Full Version : Symmetrical Section for stabs?

Anybody have any opinion on what symmetrical section to use for a full flying stab, or even a rudder? I've heard the NACA's are good, and I'm thinking 6-7% thickness.

I always use the NACA 0009, if that helps.

I always use naca 0009's and 0010's on my sailplane tails as they fly smoother than slab, and should produce less drag. In a "powered" sport model I never really found the need, whether they were all-fying or not.
All my "larger" scale models have the "scale" or assumed scale symmetrical sections on them.

I've used the NACA 0006, 0008 and 0012 sections on tails with very satisfying results. In other words, nice precise control and no "odd behavior." The 0012 was used for a T-tail vertical which needed to contain a beefy servo. The 0006 and 0008 sections were used on horizontals.

thanks for the info, guys. I guess I don't need to go as thin as the 7%.

I have used Mark Drela's sections on my ff stabs. http://www.charlesriverrc.org/articles/drelaairfoils/markdrela_tailairfoils.htm

Yes, Mark Drela's sections are particularly good for low Reynolds numbers (small/slow models). I have used a variant of his wing sections on a small pylon wing with excellent results.
