Refering to the pic(hope it shows if not I repost it online). I installed a muffler on my babe bee .049. There is a curved black metal thingy that slides to open/close to allow access? to the exhaust openings. What is that for? or just for priming with a syringe? There is still oil everywhere and it's still loud.. What is this "muffler" good for anyways?.....

Oh and below is a plane I'm working on. It started as a 3ch RTF like those on ebay. Plastic fuse, carbon boom, foam wing/tail, 7cell AAA nimh's, speed 380 direct drive folding prop. It was basically killed(wings, motor) in a bad crash and I put the "guts" into a Slow Stick. I installed some FMA micro servos(rudder/elevator) and made built up tail surfaces to replace the foam tail. 2ch radio. Going to install the babe-bee and I have yet to decide on a wing. Foam or builtup? looking for like a 30ish span, polyhedral.

Or should I lock up the rudder and go for ailerons? the babebee is a little weak in my mind. And I have very little faith in ailerons for planes with no "umph" cause they stall easily(that and pilot error). Maybe I'll fly it first and see how it is. If it is fast then I build a new wing with ailerons.... Hope I get it done within a couple weeks...

Are you sure that it's not a throttled muffler? I've seen after-market throttles for Cox engines that have just such a sliding black thingy.

TEM, Yes the black springy part is so you can pull it back to prime the motor, with a small squirt bottle. The muffler does take a little bark off the motor exhaust. If memory serves they do rob a decent amount of power. Not sure if they hurt run time or not. Regards, GLen

run a presure tap off the muffler and a tap on the gas tank. that will up your power some..

TEM,

The Cox mufflers are only good for killing power. Ditch the muffler it only adds weight. Pull the backplate and tank and drill them out to .081". This will help out in the power department. If you are handy with tools there is alot you can do to improve a Cox reedie. You can grind and balance the crankshaft, lighten the piston.. man the list goes on.

Later,
Tim

Thats a real nice looking engine you got there! No eye candy for my planes just yet. I'll scuff it up too quickly!
