I'd like to hear from anyone driving the new Novak 5800 SS brushless set-up.
I'm looking to install one in an old Losi truck.
Any reviews or first hand experience?
I see a lot of these units being sold with only a couple of runs on them.
So what's the word on the Novak brushless system?

Well, I installed one in my old XXT, which had been running an old
Trinity Midnight Stock motor. I set it back up with stock gearing
(21/88) with the Hydrodrive installed.
Lemme tell you, it is crazy powerful. I can barely get the truck to
hook up with the slipper/hydrodrive set really loose.
I decided to do some runtime testing. However, it lasted only 9
minutes 48 seconds, until the truck came to a dead stop. No power.
I took off the body and smelled hot plastic right away. The ESC had
melted down and a chunk of the ESC case had fallen off. The motor was
still very cool. It was only 66 degrees out and had been running on
gravel. The thing had run less than ten minutes total before dying on
me.
Now I get to see how good Novak's warranty service is. Hopefully mine
was just defective, because it is a freaking wild ride.

I have the Novak 5800 SS brushless mounted in my TC3 and it really
screams.
There are 6 modes that you can set the esc at. It's really nice not
having to mess with brushes, springs and commutators. As for the run
time, well that
depends on your batteries and the esc setting. I currently use SMC3300
batts
and have the esc set on mode 6, which is equal to a 19 turn motor
(well, at least that is what the lit says) and I am getting 15 min of
good hard running, and then it tapers off.

Well Novak's Warranty Service came through for m and I received a
brand new Super Sport from the wonderful UPS man today.
I set it backup just like it had been previously and two battery packs
later, the ESC was barely warm, where the old one was melted less than
10 min.
Seems as though the first one I got was a dud.
Have fun.

Is that with 6 or 7 cell packs?

Sorry about jumping in late, but which Novak system are we talking about?
The other day my Lehner Basic XL system propelled my B3 to 61.5 MPH on 6
cells. I'm hoping Novak's latest high power system will be as strong.

The 5800 motor and speed controller.

What did you pay for the two items?

My my SS5800 failed after 3 days. The magnet shifted on the rotor during a
run. This caused the pinion gear to protrude out and chew up the drive belt
of my XXX4. I sent it in Tuesday of last week. I'm waiting for the UPS guy.

Yep. They're good. I received a brand new factory sealed kit yesterday.

I've had my brushless in my Losi for about two weeks now.
The performance is as good as I had hoped for.
It is very quick (86/18 gear) and I have pulled more wheelies than
ever which is evidence of the increased torque. The torque (while not
in the gas league) is still impressive.
Set-up was incredible simply - done inside 2 minutes.
I chewed throgh the stock transmission in two sessions, now replaced
with spare Thorp gears which is now getting the power to the ground.
On the down side, the switch has failed very quickly and the mounting
of the capacitor feels a little clumsy.
I am experiencing severe glitching (chogging?) at distance from my
radio, which mya require a nother radio set to confirm the source of
the problem.
Overall, the Novak has revitalised my interest in electric and the
only question left is whether I run 6 or 7 cell packs.
I have to fix the switch, but overall, it's a great investment - real
quick, (and it runs cool) and its pure fun at speed!

I have been using brushless motors in my RC planes for the last couple of months. We always run our motors on 3 cell lipo's (equiv to 10cell nicad)
Has anyone run the novak system on this voltage? Is it even rated for this?
I am thinking of putting one of my plane motors in my old RC10.
