My nephew has a P51 with a .91 4 stroke and a 12x8 3 blade prop. It's too hot to land. Would changing to a lower prop pitch slow it down to make landings less of a white knuckle experience?

This will slow it down alright but then you have to worry about a tip-stall.
Try out it's stall characteristics at altitude first, but yes, a lower pitched prop will help slow it down. As a matter of fact with a pitch low enough it will actually act like a brake.

A 13X6 3 blade may be what you need. The larger diameter will let you get a little lower idle, and the pitch will help with the idle thrust.
I recomend trying Graupner 3 blade props. They are much better than the Master Airscrew 3 blades.

I have one of these and the first few landings were a bit hot but after after several landings I was able to get it slower each time. As long as the idle doesn't move your plane forward a stop, your prop selection should not be the reason for change. I prop my engine/plane for best fly... and not for best landing.

Thanks for the tips, guys.
Also, his transmitter and plane has flaperons setup, but the instructor at the airfield says don't use it because you lose your aileron throw. If that's right, then what's the point of flaperons?

The flaperons still work as ailerons.

I know a fellow who has that plane with a 1.20...it's a ROCKET!

We'll see if Blacksheep will post as he flies one of these Planes.
Good Luck

I fly mine with a saito 90 and 14-6 prop 2 blade and have no problems with landings (except when I screw them up myself) If none of the three blade suggestions work you may want to try the two blade. The good news is when its spinning it looks just like a four blade....
Good luck,
Peter

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'll past them along to my nephew.

One other thing to be sure of. Be sure the plane is not in a nose-heavy condition. This also can account for higher than necessary landing speeds.

Flaperons do not work well with "barn door" ailerons. It will cause tip stalls. They only work good on strip type ailerons.
