For the last couple of years the Swedish Maritime Museum here in Stockholm have arranged a modellers weekend this time a year. The museum is situated at one of the waterways surrounding the capital. Several boat modellers clubs are showing their models in a pond or in the channel.

At the Swedish hobby fair last year, the museum people found out about waterplanes and asked us to participate.

So this weekend we showed our models and also flew twice a day from the water outside the museum. Saturday there was only a little wind in the direction of the channel. We could show son Martinīs electric Donald, his 8 feet span Spruce Goose and my quarter scale Kingfisher. Sunday there was a bit more wind and from the wrong direction. Martin could not fly the Spruce Goose but some fast taxi runs and a short hop showed the public what eight electric motors can do.

Unfortunately we donnot have any action photos. Martin and I where too busy talking to interested people and flying to take photos. The keen photografer Fredrik W did not show up. He found it to windy (witch is was for park flyers).

Christer:

You have rekindled an old memory. I visited Stockholm in April, 1968. An old sailing ship had been raised from the sea floor and was being preserved at the Museum. It was covered in a huge plastic tent and was being sprayed with seawater so that it would not fall apart until preservatives could stabilize the wood.

Excellent public relations work to promote the hobby.

Yes, hrrrmm... :o I was a pilot judge at a aircombat contest on saturday, that kind of nocked me to the floor as I am still recovering from a nasty cold. When I woke up 01:00 PM on sunday my first thought was not to grab the camera and head on to the next activity. And I did know on saturday evening that it whould be to windy for me to fly at the museum so I never set the alarm clock. Christer, hope you managed without me!

Ironsides You are refering to the war-ship VASA from 1628. It is a great museum and should not be missed if you visit Stockholm again!

Yes, we managed. Sunday evening however we felt a bit dizzy after standing in the sun for two days talking waterplanes. But it was fun.
