View Full Version : I had a GREAT morning with my MPX Pico-Cub

This is pictures from saturday morning. It was a steady breeze towards the beach so no retrieval boat was needed, IF anything whould happend...

Multiplex makes special floats for the Pico-Cub, they are called Pico-Floats and instructions on how to mount them to the cub is supplied with the floats. It was an 90 minutes job to mount the floats. I did not make a water rudder, I whanted to see if the Cub could taxi without them.
The model was very light on the floats and taxied very well indead.

It turned whery easy even without water rudder, but as soon as the model started to turn downwind - it flipped over! Wing with dihedral is no good when the wind is blowing!

I just had to sit down and wait for the wind to blow the model to the beach. Only the motor was submerged. Just had to lift the model out of the water, let the water pour out and it was ready to go again.

I was flying alone so there was no one there to help me with the camera. That is why I have no in-flight shots to share. I did whant to take some photos with the model taxin towards me. I could not turn around on the water so I had to land down wind, against me. This was the first attempt. (I did lift the camera before the model had landed...) Close call:

Model is recovering from the splash:

...and taxing on like nothing special had happend.

Next attempt was more successful:

Sorry I made you download 325 kB of Pico-Cub-pictures! ;)

The set-up:

Mega 16/15/8 with APC Slow Fly 8x3,8 and 8 x KAN950. Jeti-ESC. I could easily fly around for 18 min with this set up. But splash-and-goes need more juice than gentle cruise so I had to retrieve the plane after 12 mins.

Today, sunday, the wind was blowing so you could not stand near the beach, so my planned flight at a museum show had to be cancelled.

 Nice pics.

Does the Cub handle wind better with that power system? I was wondering as my father's looking to upgrade his Cub.

Hi Fredrik, perhaps this is an appropriate paint job for your floats.
:-)

BTW, the man who rebuilt my Stearman wings after I crashed in '92 was from your Country. He did a wonderful job.
