Some gorgeous planes there, Ironsides! (Sigh), love the Unionvilles. Silly question time, please: Why are several of the floatplanes sporting what appears to be a protective device of some sort around the tailwheel, as on the "Dennyplane" for instance? Is it a snow skid? Thanks, -thumbs

Thumbs:

It is a ventral fin. When you add floats, the added vertical slab of the floats provides another surface for side winds to act upon. In some float planes it is so bad that the plane, at slow speeds (landing/takeoff), turns on its axis - forgets which way is forward. By adding extra fin at the back, the tail feathers exert enough authority to keep the plane pointed straight ahead.

The simple test is to taxi out on the water in wind at a low idle - in the case of electrics, taxi out and kill motor. If the plane does not weathervane into wind - ADD VENTRAL FIN until it does.

Another solution is to add little sub fins on the horizontal stab to increase total fin area.

Makes perfect sense, and a fine explanation also. I have seen the horizontal stab sub-fins (a la Beaver) and knew their intended purpose, but didn't make the connection when I saw those ventrals. I have a feeling I'll be using your "taxi test" advice in the future. Thanks for a great tip! -thumbs

I lost contact with that member. The sort of thing a Moderator would understand.

Sorry, no info other than documentation that might be available by clicking the underscored photo-id of each frame.

The whole WIG thing was just a passing fancy on my part. My 144 inch wing span model is hanging from the garage rafters - unflown - just a proof of concept mockup.

WIG- wing in ground effect. WIW- wing in water effect.
Same thing. Use the effect to get on step. Same as
Fun Guys Coot A. It can be done.
