I have been park flying for about 2 years now and am thinking of getting a glow powered plane. The US40 looks interesting to me and was looking for opinions as to its build quality and engine size. I have a JR 8103, so I have capable radio. I was thinking of using an OS 52FS in it.
Any opinions are welcome.

Mike, glad to see that you also want to try the world of glow powered planes. The US are fine airplanes. The 52 four stroke will fly the US but not give it the performance it needs. The Saito 72 is the Ticket for this plane if you want a 4 stroker. It will fly as gentle as a trainer but also highly aerobatic with the 72. IMHO, the best stick out of the bunch is definitely the H9 US 60 with a Saito 100. Very cool performing plane, and also good looking. Of course it does cost a little more then the 40 with the Saito 72.

I was thinking about the US60 with the OS70, but after reading here it sounds like the OS91 is a better match. I will have to look at pricing and see if I can swing the 60/91. I already have 4 81MG's that I think would work for the wing on the 40, but not enough for the 60? I would just have to get 2 more and an 8 channel Rx.

well, I hate to tell you this, but the 81MG's won't work on the 40 either. They just havn't enough torque and are to small (in size). I think they could not handle the plane in that size. The smallest servo I use for those applications is the Hitec 225MG. This one works awesome btw.
Is there a particular reason you want to go with a OS and not Saito ? The Saito is a very reliable and powerful engine. Lighter too then the OS in the same class. Not that the OS won't work, I run those too and like them a lot, but I think you get more power out of the Saito 100 then OS91 or Saito 72 then the OS 70.
You could also go 2 stroke. More userfriendly and not as hard to adjust as well as less maintenance (specially if you are new to glow). The Irvine 53 for the US 40 or the Irvine 72 for the US60 come to mind here. They are real powerhouses too. Much stronger then any OS in the same class. Less $$ too. ;) Very reliable engines.

Just thought I would let you know that I made a decision, just haven't bought it yet. I decided to move "up" to the US60. I am also going to just go for what my flying buddies and I call "Goof off" flying. I am not looking to hover this plane, just sport fly and barn storm, so I am going with the OS70 Surpass II. One of my friends is very knowledgable with OS's and thats why I chose it. He also has an older Surpass 70 on a really old RCM 60 that I got to see fly this weekend and like the performance. I am going to have a lighter plane with a more powerful engine. I think I am making the right choice here, and, if not, I can always change the engine.
Thanks for the information, it did cause me to think about what I really wanted to do.
