Hi all,

I'am starting up a new "Winter project" and at the moment i'm busy puting the budget together. The one isue that's giving me some problems is the following.......................

Wich retracts should i use for a "Brian taylor P-51". The plane has a wing span of 69", the scale is 1:7, it should weigh about 10-12lb.

I looked arround on the Robart site but, boy they have a lot of different types. Anyhow these things aren't cheap so a little help on this subject would be nice:)

Has anybody, reading this, build this plane?? and if so, are there any usefull tips or tweaks to think about on this one:)

Hi Appie,
here is a quote from a guy on rcu who I contacted called Dave, he kindly answered the question and hope he won't mind me posting it in full here. I gave him a link to here and perhaps he will stop by.
Good Luck

at the time i built the 51 i looked for the cheapest route, as you already know the retract unit has to fit very close to the leading edge so most units that fit are offset, so making the cost high. i opted for the cheap marrati large type, these are plastic housings with aliuminium cyclinders and are spring air, the one problem wiith these is that when fitted they are slighty back from the leading edge, so not truely scale, this only matters if you are entering scale competitions where points matter.

i've flown mine nearly 30 times now, they hold up well even off grass, i used the cranked legs that inwood models sell, i think they are perkins, unitracts sell them as well.

i've been very pleased with my flights, it's very easy to fly, the tail comes up quick on takeoffs and you need alot of elevator on landings so it doesn't nose over, apart from that it's great.
i'am flying mine on a laser 100, did try a 150 in it, too much, the 100 seems a good combination, with a 16x8 apc prop (does make the difference) geting about 8700rpm now.

i also used the robart wheels and the robart mechanical retracting tailwheeel which works very well also.

hope that has answered some of your questions

I built this plane about seven years ago. I used spring airs on them. It was short lived cuz I lost the elevator servo.

You can check out www.strictlyscale.com, Sean has built 2 of these, but don't recall which retracts he used.
