View Full Version : Nitro ST or MT Kit Recommendations

Hi all,

New to the sport and have been around the local hobby shops (thanks to
good advice in this group). I've made some initial decisions and would
be interested in any advice people have for how to move on. I'd like:

1) Kit. I want to build this thing myself.
2) Nitro
3) Monster truck or stadium truck
4) US$300 upper limit

I understand that the main difference MTs and STs are the handling and
speed V. torque tradeoff. I like the 4WD but I'd like it fast too.
Difficult decision for me and so I'm looking for advice for both.

Would anyone care to give me some advice as to what combos of kits,
radios, etc.. would fit me?

Thanks,

Gerald.

HPI
Savage SS
Nitro MT

I personally like HPI. They put a good kit together and have a very high
after market following. I'd say T-Maxx, but I cannot stand Traxxas.

You're happiness would be complete with an 1/8 scale buggy like an Ofna MBX.
If you must have a truck, then the HPI Nitro MT will fit your bill.

Thanks Patrick. The Nitro MT is $270 on TowerHobbies and I believe I
have to get a radio and other miscellaneous items.

What radio do you suggest? FM would be great but other than the
modulation, to me a radio is a radio and I can't find much difference.
Recommendations?

Gerald.

Gerald,

I'd say you need to do a little more research. If you intend to actually
race, a stadium truck is a lot of fun, cost you a lot less, and have a lot
less maintenance issues. I don't think you could build a competitive monster
truck for less than $700.-$800. As it is, it will be hard to build a
competive stadium truck for under $300. You might want to look on E-bay and
see what you can find. If you're just going to run in the dirt and not race,
a monster truck might be more fun, stadium trucks are fun only when going
fast and over jumps. The 4WD is nice for climbing, etc.
