I am posting this for my nephew who is interested in RC boats. Hope this is the right forum. He is looking for boat recommendations... this will be his first RC boat that didn't come from a toy store. He is looking for a boat with the following characteristics. Would like to have the price complete somewhere between $200-$300 USD.
1) At least 30 inches in length
2) Fast
3) I'm thinking electric since glow powered can be troublesome
4) He wants to use it in the bay where the water is salty. I figured with electric he could toss it in the pool and clean it out!
I've seen the ABC Super Hawaii and Traxxas Villain IV...are those good boats. Any thoughts?

I have only seen a couple Traxxas Villians that were set up properly. Once it gets dialed in it is a good running boat.
Tower hobbies may be a good place to shop and also
Hobby lobby International is another US based distributor.
I recently saw a couple Zig Zag racers, by "Hobby Zone", out on the local pond. These might be a little smaller than you are looking for, but for around $80 dollars they come with the radio batteries and charger.
You can spend the extra money on additional batteries.
Heck you could get two and race them.
These little racers are self righting and well sealed. So a little salt water will have a difficult time getting into the boat.
I have been keeping an eye out for a cute little go fast boat for a while, and these are something I am considering picking up.

I saw $200-$300 for a 30" boat-fast and etc. i am going to be totally honest; u r not going to get a 30" boat in that price range, sorry about bubble busting. There is a boat out called Sidewinder, made by T.S. Davis of Chesterfield, Mich. and is sold thru www.finedesignrc.com at 26" long and should be powered by a new 700-8.4 Grauper motor on 12-gp3300 cells. and a 642 Octura prop and a rc-hydros esc which is waterproof and watercooled. I have 2 of them and are flawless. They ( esc ) start at $75.00 for 60 amp which will be enough for what u want! I am retired with no afflia. with any comm. people, just little old me! This will cost about $400.00 but it is no JUNK CRAP and will last a long unless u race, then u had better have a FAT wallet!

SH and Villian need to be revamped for there out drive system which has major universal joint problems at high rpm's and maintenance for twin motors is high and in long run is not cost effective unless u put a SS1 or a new 700-8.4 with direct drive and flex cable and 12-gp3300 cells and then u will have something. Ok, here's something else to ponder and that is on fines site is the h20 deep vee at 21" long and 7' wide. I have a black on on 6 cells and a Hughey 12/3 handwound motor on a 632 prop which has been clocked at 25 mph. I have saddle packs which are 2600 at 6 cells and planes every time fore 4:00 minutes and rides flat on the keel and turns on a dime. If i had knowledge how to post picture here, i would do it , in a second!

I have been keeping an eye out for a cute little go fast boat for a while, and these are something I am considering picking up. I purchased a hobbyzone zig zag racer electric remote controlled boat and it worked well for about 10 runs. The controller is cheap and the return spring for the controller wheel snapped off and I took it all apart and reinforced it. The motor burned out at about 12 runs and I replaced it. I bought an additional battery when I bought the boat and it refused to charge after 6 runs. Now the controller just cycles with a beep every other second with brand new batteries and the boat no longer responds. This design allows water to get up under the cover and thus the cause of motor failure and to reciever. It has a rubber plug just above the rudder that has to be removed after operation to allow water to drain out of boat hull. I would have included a soft sponge seal between cover and boat. I will be looking for a product more suited for water.
