Just taking out the diff balls doesn't quite work the way i thought it would . Granted it does provide some posi-traction , but it acts more like a limited slip diff. The gear does get a little messed up , but it is usable for the next step.

And now for the main aTraction..

I clamped both halves together in a vise and carfully made two slots in the diff rings and halfs about an 1/8th inch deep 180 degrees apart using a rotary tool with a narrow cutting disk ( not the fiberglass cut off disk). I then took an old coping saw blade and cut (2) pieces slightly less than the diff gear is wide. Then reassembled the diff leaving out the diff balls. I inserted the saw blade pieces through the gear and into the slots I had made , making sure to put a little ca on them . I then tightened the diff and left the ca to dry. After the ca was dry I shimmed the diff so it ran in line with the other gears and in the center of the tranny. Installation is the reverse of removal.

The field trial:
Acceleration... Straight as an arrow right off the line. dual rooster tails , what a sight!
Turning... This is an OFF-Road truck not a street racer (well it is now). Couldn't notice much DIFFerance in off road tests. I don't miss the diff, it turns nuff said.
Climbing/Jumping... Got wall? With a little taller than stock ride height it is alittle tippy when I got the truck near vertical, but with anything less...look out i'm comin up. Rocks are a blast with posi traction. Havent done much jumping lately but everything holds together.

Having locked the diff there will be more gear strain if you don't land with four on the floor. If you plan on jumping , you will want to loosen the slipper a little so it gives instead of a gear.

Conclusion... I only have a couple of runs on this mod but so far so good. I like having true two wheel drive(don't get me wrong 4wheel drive rocks but some of us can't afford it). Besides this mod is cheap! Is it right for you ,I don't know, but it's fun. My next challenge ...home built 4wheel drive, it's worth a try don't you think?

P.S. If you try this mod I assume NO responsibilty for damage to persons or property.

Put the power to the ground
