View Full Version : Speed upgrades for a Duratrax Evader ST?
You may remember, I bought an entire setup a week ago (radio, 5 cheap
1900mah battery packs, charger, Evader ST RTR). For the kids of course (3
and 4)
I thought that this would be just fine for a basher for me and the boys, and
I suppose it really is, but I want more speed!. What do you think the first
step should be? Hotter motor? Different gearing? I know either way, the
faster the car gets the more I will need better batteries.
The truck is broken down at the moment. A sign post took out the front
shock tower and I think jumping the truck onto concrete has caused the rear
wheels to crack. I have both parts on order from tower.
THANKS!

hehe.....SURE. Admit it. the kids havent even seen the car yet. 8)
motor AND gearing. Hotter motors like lower gearing (smaller pinion)
They also like having spare parts in the field box. ie: shock towers, front
suspension arms, etc.
And yes, the smaller number of turns your new motor has, the faster it goes.
And the faster it will blow through a battery.
Fortunately, mod motors for bashers are cheap and easy to swap.
Others here with more electric experience can provide specific suggestions,
but im thinking a 17 turn single.

While I agree that a motor and gearing are a good way to go, you need to
understand that the speed control you have on the Evader is nearly maxxed
out with the motor it comes with. To upgrade to a much faster motor, you're
going to be dropping some bucks on a new speed control as well, or you'll
fry the one you have and be out of action again. All speed cotrols are
rated for the max current they can carry or with the lowest turn rating they
can support. Check that against what you plan to run. (Note that this is
all negated if you already have a Duratrax Intellispeed on there- those are
fairly high rating, but usually not included stock.) If you're looking for
cheap speed, then changing your gear ratios and trading bottom end torque
for top end speed is how to do it. If you want all around faster
performance, you'll have to upgrade the speed control and motor.

I may decide to just drive the car as-is for now, maybe a new pinion gear,
and then someday if my interest holds I will just buy a new car all together
and build it for speed. I would have to upgrade nearly everything anyway.
THANKS!
