View Full Version : Aeroworks 300 3d Profile - the big'un

I just received my Aeroworks profile 3D Extra 300 and would like to hear from anyone that has experience with this model.

I would like to fly it with one of my MVVS 1.60 gas engines, but am wondering if it will be enough power. I'm not worried about hovering at the moment. TIA

well, power should be enough, and you should be able to hover.
Mine lasted only 10 seconds in flight and then the whole tail came loose due to flutter. No need to tell how the maiden flight ended :( You will defintely have to add tail braces. It is a must. trust me. I will add pics tomorrow on how I increased my elevator and lost the tail due to not having braces. Stay tuned.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, Ulf. What a bummer.

I have several other engines that I can use if the MVVS 1.60 gasser does not work out, but I don't know how wide the crankcase is between them. I guess I should look before I make any commitment to the MVVS.

I wonder what caused the failure in your tail group?

well, I think the failuire was due to weak wood and increasing the elevator (adding counter balances) for more throw. I heard from other profile pilots that it was needed in order to hold a nice hover and have full 3D capability. The inner elevator halfs where also cut down to allow more rudder throw, so counter balances where added to the elevator. Well, it fluttered due to no tail braces. Others have experienced that too ut didn't loose their plane. Even Rocco from Aeroworks suggested adding them after I told them about my crash. They replaced the ARF without hesitation (I sold that one, since I had enough). If you look how clean the break was, I really think that they didn't used the best wood. Take a look at some pictures.

Due to the extreme flutter, I lost 2 high $$ servos too :(

I don't see a plywood joiner in there anywhere, or something else to stiffen the horizontal stab halves.

It is difficult to believe that Aeroworks would produce a model that they know is prone to failure. I wonder what went wrong? Improper wood selection could account for some of it, but even my forty powered models utilize a little plywood or carbon fibre braced spars to avoid such problems.

Do you think that some triangle stock on the outside, scabbed to the fuselage and horizontal stab, would have helped enough?

you are right, no plywood or any kind of hardwood at all. That's why I took those pictures.
I think a triangle stock will help, but not be sufficient. I would add carbon fiber strips (top and bottom) and the tail braces (those are a must I think).

Not to sound too negative, but every ARF high performance model that I have bought so far has had serious defects of one kind or another. Fortunately, I have found out before attempting to fly them, but this is getting rather old.

What is the point in buying an ARF if you have to rebuild the thing before considering flying it? No point at all, as far as I am concerned.

I was thinking about getting the Aeroworks 300 3d Profile myself, but before ordering one I did a little research on it and found that people were experiancing severe failures like you had during aerobatics and most of the time it was the wing folding up.

If there is any chance that you want to build one from a kit, Get the Big OMP 540 instead of the Aeroworks.

I checked out the OMP 540 looks like a great plane and since its a kit you can build it for extra strength were it needs it. if any one wants here is a link to a forum on rc universe where a member is building one. Thanks Ulf.

I'm afraid of the Aeroworks now. OMP is the only way I'd go.
