I've been told that powering this beauty w/g26 Zenoah really helps eliminate some of its' bad habits...it's quite the handful w/ the Saito. Any advice?

I have a Taylorcraft I'm working on. I had a new G38 and decided to use it instead of the G23/26. There was no doubt this plane needed a gas engine. I have a few details to work out and she should be ready to fly. Here are a few pics.

We have 2 in our club. One with the G23 and the other with the G26. Both are really nice flyers and do all scale acrobatics. I would really like one or the super cub.

My DynaFlite Super Decathlon, which I think is quite similar in size, flys great on a second generation G-23 (8500 on 16-10 Bolly). But I chopped a lot of avoirdupois out of itso it flys at 13#.

If you plan on the smoke and scaling, you should look at one of the small 2.4's such as a Brison, another superb power plant! Tex.

I have the TC with a Super Tiger G-2300 and a wood Master Airscrew 18x8 and flew it for the first time today. It flew great. It won't hover or climb like a rocket but it had plenty of power for a Taylorcraft. With the 2300 and a Hangar 9 1500 mah battery it balanced a little bit tail heavy but I had no problem at all and did not have to add weight. The only thing that I plan on doing is increasing the aileron throw. Other than that it is a wonderful plane.

I went ahead w/the G23, no smoke and it flew very scale.
Not fast, but scale. I may try the G26 to pep it up a bit, but I'm pretty happy for now...Thanks!

what bad habits with the saito are you talking about?I've had one with a saito 1.80 since they were released and still love to fly the airplane. It has no bad habits and the power of the saito is perfect.Unlimited vertical.

I have several planes w/Saito power, including a Dave Parick Ultimate 120 , Saito150, and it is SWEET!
I think most of the TC's problems were due to the light weight...primarily, the wind would whip it around pretty hard. I don't have that problem anymore...OK?

OK!

I have a 1.80 in mine and with the supplied motor mount without the spacers I got six and a half with the motor pushed all the way forward. Wonder if they sold the plane with two different style mounts? I agree with eagleflyer no bad habits with my saitoed T-Craft and he isnt kidding about unlimited vertical!!! :D

Will someone who owns a H9 TC do me a favor ans measure the LG dimensions where it attaches to the fuse, both width and length? I have an old TC that came to me on floats, and I want to put gear back on it...the H9 replacement part is way cheaper than the aftermarkets, but the guy at Horizon couldnt give me dimensions.

thanks,
David

david if you are talking about the dimensions of the top of the landing gear its self, mine measures 8 3/4 by 3 1/4 inches.
Tell me about your floats. I have wanted to put mine on bobbers for some time now. Length, brand, how scale do they look, and do they float the plane well enough? Thanks for the info.

Thanks,

I will have to look at mine again, to see how well that will work. The floats were not mounted to the plane actually, and I dont know anything about them except they are about the size for a 1/4 cub, etc. I'm gonna sell em at some point after SEFF, I think.

thanks,
David

I just bought a H9 TC that was never finished. It has a Saito 1.80 hanging on the nose that has never been ran. I enjoy 3D and realize this isn't really a 3D plane, however, with this engine and the right prop I believe it will be close. What prop would you reccommend for this type of flying?

Thanks,
Harry

I like the APC sport and scimitar nylon props, and the Zinger super pro series in wood, but I'm hardly an authority so I'll leave the post open to the experts.
How 'bout it guys?

What size and pitch?
My LHS recommended an APC 16x6. Does this sound correct?

Harry,

I replied to your pm...I am running a 16x6 on the 1.20 surpass, so I would think you could go with the horizon reccommended 17x6, or even an 18x6 without problems.

Thanks David. I thought 16x6 sounded a little short. I've already got the 16x6, so I'll go pick up a 17x6 and try'em both.

Not sure.
I was just looking at B&B Specialties website.
They have a G45, but I didn't see any specs as to how much it weighs.
I have Hangar 9 TCraft like yours but it isbn't built yet, been devoting more time to my sailplanes.

I have a "Bennett Built" G26 for it.

I have bought all my big engines off of Dick Bennett, he makes good engines,is a great guy to deal with, and has fair prices.
He is a professional machinist by trade, and really knows how to rework these engines and get the most out of them.

I have never had a problem with any engine I bought from him.

He will service what he sells too, so that counts!

Good luck!
Ed

Thought I'd resurrect this thread and add to my previous post.

I've since converted my 25% scale Lanier Tcraft to electric power. Pulled the G26 and replaced it with a Hacker A50-12L motor. two 5s 5000 packs in parallel wiht an 18x8 prop gets me at least 12-15 minutes flight time. Power output seems about the same ast the G26 with ALOT less vibration and noise.

I have a Homelite 30cc running on CH ignition......couldn't ask for a better flying model ! I "think" it topped out around 15 lbs. :D
