View Full Version : Servo for tail??

Well, I stripped my Futaba S9203 servo last week, replaced the gears, and
now the motor is also shot. So, I am in need of a replacement servo, but am
unsure of what one to get.
My specs:
Concept 30 SRX (1700 head speed)
CSM360 HH Gyro
Futaba GV-1 governor
6volt 1400MAh battery
My 9203 spec'ed out at .09/99oz w/2 metal gears. Most of the digital servos
that run close to these specs only operate at 4.8v, and I want to stay with
6volts. What are your suggestions for a good tail servo that is fast, has
high torque, and can handle 6volts (and is less than $100US)
Thanks!

OK, I picked up a Futaba S9253 server, since that is what everyone is
recommending on the Net, and is included with the Futaba 401 gyro (I am
running a CSM 360). I am concerned about the torque. I always thought you
needed some decent torque to help with pulling out of fast piros and such.
This servo is pathetic at 28oz! Stalling it is no problem (on the bench). It
doesn't feel 'quite right' on the bench, since this is my first digital, but
I attribute that to the 6" standard extension. I will be (trying) to pick up
a HD one tomorrow (at the local HobbyTown - yeah right - better off buying
lamp cord from a HW store than to rely on HT to have anything worth while).
Hopefully that will satisfy me. I also picked up a new 2700MAh 4.8V pack to
run it on, since it is only rated to 4.8 volts. I will post later how it
works when I get a chance to test it.

Don't be fooled by the ease of stalling on the bench, just make sure it
CAN'T stall due to mechanical limits being exceeded on the heli. I can't
remember which heli you're using it on, but if it's capable of bringing a
3bhp powered 60/75/90 sized heli to a dead stop AND hold the heading through
a sideways loop, it's going to piss all over anything you can throw at it
with a 30 or 50 sized machine.

I won't expect to hear it's not man enough for the job, and if that's what
you find, I'd say "look at the heli not the servo"

Well, I had it out today on my C30 and all worked well, despite my previous
concerns. I have no binding, nor does it ever reach the extreme limits to
cause binding. I guess torque isn't everything :) Can't say I noticed
anything since my 9203 was at .09/sec on 6V, and the 9293 is .09/sec on 4.8V
(yes, I switched back to 4.8V - don't want to risk a $120 servo). My concern
was with pulling out of fast piro's, and it did it with authority. Also, I
re-read the tail rotor chapter in Ray's last night (after a few years of
sitting on the bookshelf) and I now understand why torque is not needed on
the tail - the forces at do DO all the work! I was originally thinking along
the lines that the servo had to manually move this fast rotating assembly
when in fact, all it has to do is hold it. I brought the book out to the
field today to show a few others, since we were all in agreement that torque
was needed (but have since converted!)
