View Full Version : In search of RC suface sailors!

San Diego non-members of SASSASS would like to meet people interested in RC
surface sailing, either by playing with our toys on any given Sunday at
Cardiff or Mesa College, or bringing your own version of a sail car to race,
play soccer, do slaloms, beat the clock, or simply sit and watch as others
make fools of themselves chasing a wind-blown model helter skelter as they
crash, stall or capsize during the 'events'.
Why do I say non-members of SASSASS? Well, there is no membership, that I
know of. Just the attitude!
If we start practices now, somebody will be 'elected' to represent San Diego
next March at the Ivanpah Dry Lake next to Whiskey Pete's on the
California/Nevada border for the International event sponsored by the
International Radio Control Surface Sailing Association IRCSSA....
Anybody???

Geez Wayne, give it a rest huh?
notice this group is rec.models.rc.water..
apparently the "water" part is lost on you.
You've been here many times, enough already

Hi Keyz... my first little sailboat graced the mirrors pond at the swanky
Polanco colony in Mexico back in 1942... I then made a balsa glider that
went high into the air and glided gracefully down - sometimes to land in the
water. Of course! I worked like crazy, as a kid, to make an automatic
steering/sheeting mechanism that would keep my next model boat into the wind
at a graceful reach or upwind tack, and then when luffing, pull the tiller
and hopefully catch the wind from another angle. I built one of the first RC
model airplanes, the LiveWire in 1952/53 using an escapement device that you
had to wind up and a radio signal would trigger a solenoid which would allow
the escapement, like a watch mechanism, to move the rudder right, another
click to neutral, another click to left, another click to neutral. So you
timed your clicks accordingly.
I learned to sail in Hawaii, at Keehi lagoon, in a 110 then skippered a 30'
S boat. I taught my son to sail in a home-built catamaran I thought would
revolutionize sailing for it's safety and ease. Then he built his own Glenn
L 10 in my shop, with a bit of help. He designed and built a trailer to
carry the boat from our Jeffesson St. to the Chula Vista marina with his
bicycle. He became a champion with Hobie Cats and then joined the Navy to
become a Seal. Now, in his late 30's, he is trying to make sailing, RC
stuff, wind and modeling into something, maybe a bit different from the
normal, so more people can enjoy the outdoors, the vast new parks and
recreation areas we taxpayers provide for all of us, and simply wants to
spread the word to water enthusiasts, to air enthusiasts and even to nitro
motor enthusiasts, that there is something else out there called a sail car,
land yacht, or whatever... and it can be fun. He is inviting you to look at
pictures of people having fun. And if he happens to sell a Windjammer, he
will spend the rest of the next two days building one and shipping it out
for the cost of materials and not a penny in his pocket.
You call this spamming?
I call it American Entrepreneurship. If you don't like it, just click on
your message manager and kill my postings. It's that simple.
Wayne, in Chula Vista, where you would be most welcome to drive a wind car
at our expense.

Please see my note to Keyz in this sting.

Great, tell us more about the rc sail stuff. That's what this group is
about. As far as the land sailing, the first fifty times were enough,
there is still the same 5 pictures on the webpage that were there months
ago and nothing else.
The whole point is this is a RC WATER group. If the land stuff is so
interesting to so many people why don't you start your own group. Call
it rec.models.rc.landsailing or something. Or stick to the generic rc
groups.
Judging from the millions of people responding so positively to the
postings in here, starting your own group shouldn't be a problem.
The problem with the newsgroups is that people do not know when to give
it a rest. Crossposting to every single group that you think might be
remotely interested in whatever you are peddeling is the quickest way to
turn off the very same people you are trying to reach.
Usenet is a great place for sharing information, yet like most
subcultures there are unwritten rules and continuously posting off topic
stuff in a group is one of the big no no's. Go post your stuff in the
rec.woodworking group and see how fast you will get sent packing.

Take it easy there Keyz.
You are right on the subculture stuff though. Obviously they are not
regular newgroup regulars and are using it as a source in their business.
They just don't understand how the groups really work, and are taken
aback at your responces.
In a moderated group they wouldn't even make it past the delete key.
And Wyane I have to agree with him, if you want tell us about your rc
sailing days, or share old plans or techniques, we will be glad to
welcome you in the group. If all you are doing is giving us the same url
to the same webpage then it is getting kinda old. Perhaps if you were
constantly adding pictures or info that would make it more appealing.
The two times I have visited your site, once when I fist saw a post from
you, and just now, there is little if any change.
Just my two cents.
