I posted this on RCU and have gotten minimal response so I thought I'd post
it here too and see what you all think...Thanks !
Since my boy learned to walk he's had at least a half dozen small RC cars.
While I really havent messed with cars since I was 18 I am now
wholeheartedly into airplanes.
RC cars though still seem to me to be the best way to keep him interested in
the hobby till he gets old enough to start flying.
The problem is that he gets bored quickly with the little , slow moving cars
his mother and I have bought him the past couple years. I get bored with
them too.
His birthday is coming up soon and Im thinking of getting him a "hobby
grade" buggy of some sort so that I will be able to buy replacement parts as
needed. The only electric I see that appeals to me is the Wild Willy 2 but
Im wondering if this would OK for him. I figure I would use an ESC and by
using EPA, ATV or DR I think I could tame it down enough for him to drive.
With a ESC and a decent radio it could get rather expensive and would really
rather get him something cheaper but would still want to be able to find
replacement parts in the future.

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations about this ?

Thanks,
John

My 4 year old son has a blast with the old RC-10 Team Car I had in
college. Maybe you can find a used one cheap. It takes a hit once in a
while and I don't feel too bad about it since it's already had a good
life. Good luck.

I suggest one of the many low-cost monster trucks, like the Traxxas
Stampede. The Willy is a pretty good choice too.

When my littlest got started recently at 4.5 years, I picked up a
Associated T-2. It had all the electronics and motor in it. An Ebay
purchase of about 100.00.

So far the truck is a real brute, and takes all kinds of punishment,
more so than the B3 buggy, and the T3 trucks.

A guy we race with, off-road, just got his 5 year old kid a Stampede, to
backyard bash, and just loves it.

My oldest daughter has been driving my cars and trucks since she was
about 4 with no problems. Now that she's a little older, she wants me
to get her a plane. I figure there are enough very basic backyard
fliers that she can fly and not risk any of my larger stuff.

sounds great.
You can get a decent radio/esc combo from futaba. i like the
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXASX4**&P=7

wild willy may be fun because of its stunt abilities, but a 'normal' truck
or buggy will be much faster.
I havent heard any negatives on the evader either.
My experience with duratrax has been mostly positive in the past. They have
weaknesses like everyone else.
I dont like their bearings. when they wear out, replace them with dynamite
red-seals.
The stress-tech plastic really is bomb-proof, but racers dont like it
because its too flexible. Perfect for a young basher.

Parts availability really is crucial. See what the store sells and supports,
and make a short list of the cars that interest you. ask for a rating of
them here.
