View Full Version : ESC or Mech Speed control?

Is it worth getting a ESC vs Mechanical? I hear the ESC don't fare well with water (burn-up)?
Has wet grass ever burned-up ESC? I understand puddles of water are a problem.
What are the + & - of ESC and Mechanical speed controls?
How much does the Mechanical speed control reduce runtime, due to the resistors?
I could go either way. What would you do?
Just getting into RC trucks. Currently into RC airplanes (electric). Want something mainly for the side yard 75'x200' area to run on mowed field grass. Looking at electric ST (Rustler, evador). Should I consider the a Monster truck (Stampede) for the rough grass or will the ST handle it fine. Want lots of power to go up to speed quick. Top speed doesn't matter, just want lots of guts so I don't outgrow the truck. Nitro is out of the question for the neighborhood.
Thanks
Dave

ESC are far better than mechanical ones, you will get longer run times,
better control, reduced weight of truck.
You can also get waterproof ESC but you will still have to cover the rest
of the radio gear if you plan to run your truck anywhere wet.

I would run an electric Rustler on wet grass. The motor is in the very
back and it can easily get wet and I'm sure it wouldn't take much to
fry the motor and/or the ESC. I just know I would get really nervous
about doing that. It's alot easier to waterproof a nitro truck than
an electric one. IMHO.
