The same thing is happening to this group that is happening to our
hobby...IT IS DYING. This is due to A LOT of factors. Some of which
are....Lousy suppliers (try to get K&B anything). Hobby shops do not
ge tthe support they need. very few people BUILD anymore..etc. I
remember going to LOCAL races and seeing nearly 100 boats, now they
have to combine classes just to have enough boats for a heat. I was
into CL airplanes and saw the same thing happen there. give it a year
or two and you will a the pond alone and recycling parts because you
can't get them new. Look at a big supplier like tower, have you seen
how little real rc boat equipment they have?? or the thinness of RC
boat modeler.

In a similar point, there was a local casting pond here that was regularly
used for all types of boats. That was until someone went in early on a
regular occasions to run it wide open with little noise reduction. That
closed it for nitro powered models. The latest hit there was when the local
parks department closed it due to maintenance costs. Now the only place to
run anything is rivers and lakes that also cater to full-scale boats. And
you know how considerate jet-skiers can be. It's a shame to see where this
"instant gratification" society is taking us. I like my hobbies, and am
afraid that one day my boys can't enjoy it.

Well until the casting pond is rebuilt and reopened,
We have been sailing at Murray Hill off Scholls Ferry road and Murry road in Beaverton.

Also, there will be a "sail in" At the Tualitan Commons in Tualtin, OR during the Crawdad Festival, August 9, and 10th.
Sponsored by the NW R/C boat modelers from Seattle.
The local boat club is rumored to be sailing those days also.

I agree that much of the trouble is that people just cannot be bothered
these days, but6 I also believe that many people who run clubs of any type
could not run a p*** up in a brewery. I am chairman of a club (not models)
and trying to get committee members to actually do something is really hard
work and trying to get things planned well in advance is also a problem.
Pubilicity and Communication are two very important factors, factors which
few people seem to realise.

The hobby is not dead..... people have only moved away from this forum. You can find many thriving bulliten boards:

Nah, we ain't dead.. We be SAILING!!! *grin* Actually, I was kinda
wondering what had happened to the posts here because it has kind of
died. I'll grant you that. Every group on the web has to have some
kind of critical mass to keep it going. If a site dies, it's not
necessarily because the hobby is dying - it's probably that the site
isn't generating enough interest to kepe going on its own.

This could be a post on its own, but: I'm a hobbyist and my
philosophy of life is simple - people in the world are either
hobbyists or non-hobbyists. Non-hobbyists aren't worth talking to.
But a hobby's a hobby - be it work itself (if you love it that much),
or community groups, or whatever. Look at all the business groups out
there (and I've belonged to a few): Data Processing Managers of
America. APICS. Software user groups - you name it. They're not
hobbies - they're obsessions or avocations.

And almost without exception, every hobby I've enjoyed has had the
same editorializing going on almost full-time: How do we attract new
blood to our hobby? C/L flying. R/C flying. R/C boating.
Motorcycling. But there's always a steady influx of new blood - and
those people who are attracted to a particular hobby have their own
reasons. They don't, at least initially, give a hoot about the
organizations that are promoting the hobby. They have their own
interests. An organization can KEEP the hobbyists interested, but in
my opinion organizations don't attract new hobbyists in general. Yeah
- a flying demo or sailing demo or whatever will attract some
momentary interest, but only those who interested in a hobby in the
first place (without the organizsaiton's promotional attempts) will
even look at a hobby for a second time.

With that said - we have to be completely aware of, and sensitive to,
those people who are showing some interest in what we do. We have to
nurture, coddle, stroke, encourage and assist them in every way
possible. With that said - if there's no traffic on a site, it
doesn't encourage posting "Is anyone listening?". On the other side
of the coin, you have the fratricide that occurs regularly on
rcsailing.net - do you want to post over there? It's wicked - I
rarely post because of the flamers. That's no way to treat a hobby
(to paraphrase).

We're here - just bizzy :)

While we're at it:

www.rcsailing.net (post at your peril)
www.rcuniverse.com (look in the boat forums - speed, scale, sail, you
name it)
www.amya.net contains a links page that points to many forum sites -
sailing related, of course.

[snip]

I'm new to R/C Sailing, having just completed a Victoria kit and sailed it a
few times in a local park pond. I was a little concerned that I would grow
bored with it, since there have been no other boats in sight the three times
I've taken it out... But I gotta tell you, if it hadn't been for this group,
I wouldn't have been able to build the boat to my satisfaction, nor supply
it with an appropriate radio/servos.

As for finding other folks to sail with, the Los Angeles Times weekly
magazine last week ran an article on a sailing club in the San Fernando
Valley (Balboa Park) that boasts some 30 members. I'm heading over there
next Sunday.

umi,
i too live in beaverton and am an rc boat modeller but i dont "sail",i use gas or glow do you know when or even if they allow gas boats at murray hill? i live right down the street and have thought about trying it out,but have never seen anyone down there.i have been using bethany lake on the end of 185th.it is a shame that they closed westmoreland all because of one guy(i unfortunately know who he and his bad attitude are)if you want i would be willing to send you my direct email.

Most of us are running scale electric.

Gary Finlay is usually down there running his Hydros on any Sunday. I have been building more than sailing this year. We were down there yesterday though. (see the LST posting)
If you e-mail me I will add you to our independent model boater list.

We got permission to run gas on Tualatin commons last month, but only for one day. We will probably will run the same even next year, but if it takes place at Westmoreland then gas is right out. Gas has been off limits for over 6 years down there.
Word is that the pond may be rebuilt or at least refilled by the end of the year.

The other place to run gas is out at the Cemetary off TV Hwy in Hillsboro. I have heard about some people running out there.

Bethany is a nice option though, now that there is some parking.
And if the lily pads don't take over.

And it is tough to access, but there is an area just east of Clackamas park below the concrete plant. I think it is an old gravel pit.

We do a yearly pond evaluation, and believe me it is tough to find ponds to access. One of the most promising ones got built into a golf course off Witch Hazel road. If I win the lottery, I am going to build a golf course with a nice pond. Then I will close 9 holes once a month for model boating!:D

I just finished a presentation to my town parks department to allow us
to sail - we live in an overly-ordinanced town (I just made up that
word). Your best bet is to just call 'em and find out.

Don't think I haven't contacted numerous property owners and City park Supervisors for pond access. It is a never ending task around here.

As for gas boats in Portland, Oregon,...August 16th and 17th

There are Model boat races being held at the PGE Trojan Facility this weekend(the local Nuclear power plant).
On Route 30, Raineer, Oregon

This is a first time event. All gas, All Nitro...
up to 75 mph boats will be running!

Event organizers are expecting 150 participants from Oregon Washington, and Montana.
