Can somebody tell me the background of the name of this phenomena. I know that it is a rather unwanted combination of pitch and roll oscillations, but why Dutch? I feel offended!;)
Is it the bread variety maybe? I know that, in the English language, the term "Dutch" usually means something cheap, something nasty or a combination of both. Not that again eh!
Somebody help me!

Max,

I did a search and didn't find the origin . . . . but, I did find this bit of info :

7. Roll your own, smoke your own. The American practice of sharing joints has never caught on in Holland. The Dutch roll their own tobacco laced joints and like to smoke it themselves. Oh they'll occasionally pass it to a friend, but it's not an ingrained social custom here. Needless to say, it's smart not share your joints or pipe with strangers. It might seem impolite not to pass it around, but these days you never know what else you might be passing around along with that joint. Be smart, smoke it yourself or only with those you know. Practice safe smoke.

Could this be the reason behind the "Dutch Roll"????

:D :D :D

The phrase comes indeed from Holland. It refers to the side-to-side motion of an iceskater's shoulders as he moves in a straight line.
Looking at the airplane motion there is a similarity.

I always assumed that it referred to the fact that the Dutch invented beer with hops in it, as against ale, which was weaker, and had none...:)

Talking of beer .......I believe that there is still an old law in The Netherlands (as it is properly known) that any contract signed after 3pm is not legally binding!! The reason for this is that, in the old days, the drinking water used to be so bad that people drank beer all day and were not in a fit state by 3pm to be making big decisions!!!

The US Senate should adopt this practice. I hear they have extreme "power lunches" in Washington !!!

The term comes from K.D. Woods Technical aerodynamics (circa 1933) when discussing lateral stability. "...an undamped yawing and rolling motion sometimes described as a 'Dutch roll' because of its similarity to the typical motion of a Dutchmen skating on ice using the typical Dutch skates." Also Sparky Paul's explation.

Thanks guys!
I only asked one question and I am learning about smoking weed, drinking beer and Dutch law. How is that for return on investment! I think I'll stick with aeromodelling....
