I need some advice on getting rid of old model fuel. I have some old
model airplane fuel and I don't know what to do with it. Is there a
hazardous waste disposal site to go to in the state of Virginia? Can this
fuel be safely reused in a weed wacker or a lawn mower? It is a
nitrous-methane mix from Cox hobbies. Thanks for your help in advance.

It won't work in engines designed to run on gasoline, unless you make
significant modifications to the carburetors.
Are you sure there is anything wrong with the fuel? If it is non cloudy,
its probably still ok so you could use it in model engines, or give it away
to other modellers.
If the fuel is cloudy, or you want rid of it for some other reason, burning
it is the best way:
Pour it into an open topped metal can or bucket in the middle of a large
open area and set fire to it. Just throw in a piece of burning paper to get
it going. It burns fairly rapidly, but not as violently as gasoline. It
burns with a fairly clear flame, so in strong light you may not see the
flames, but you will still be able to feel the heat from them.
Martin.

Put in you plane's tank and go fly. Just because it is made by Cox
doesn't mean a larger glow engine won't burn it!

In my area, our county has a Hazardous Recycling program once a quarter and
over there, they will take any hazardous chemical.
You can call your local township office and they should know if your county
has this recycling.

Andy; Your fuel is most likely alcohol, nitro methane, and probably castor
oil. As long as the container has been air tight, contains no water, it
will probably function ok. To dispose of small amounts of fuel pour it on a
non pervious surface (concrete) during the hot of the day and let it
evaporate. Do not let it drain into the storm sewers of sink into the soil.
Large amounts could contaminate ground water. Small amounts of "gas" based
fuel can be handled the same way. Use precautions to avoid a fire, and not
in the middle of your drive way, it would probably leave stains. Richard
