what are some of the techniques on makeing scale rivits?

If you are talking about domed head rivets, you can simulate them with small drops of white glue applied with a syringe and needle.

.......and if you want flush rivets, sharpen an appropriate diameter brass tube and lightly cut a circle into the top layer or two of paint on the model. Similarly, screws and Dzus fasteners - but with the addition of a slot applied after cutting the circle.

Those are both excellent tips - if using a hypodermic I've read that you can get a neater rivet if you grind the point off the needle to make the end of the needle "square" rather than with the pointy bit that sticks into the skin.

If you are feeling particularly "flush" you can even buy rivets ready made - I know amazing isn't it - I believe Sig used to do them, seem to remember an article in RC Scale International mag that had a picture of them and here is a link to someone who sells them

$12.99 for a pack of 1,200 rivets- that's close to 1c each.

I think the jet chaps also have dry transfer lettering sheets that can be used to simulate rivets on their models.

Rivetting stuff.
