View Full Version : voltage readings during peak charging

I have a peak charger that allows me to measure voltage by plugging in a
meter during charging. I noticed a 2400mah NICD reaches about 9.6 to 9.9
volts then the charger stops charging and the battery is fully charged.

A battery that was run in a car, and then discharged on a set of 10
bulbs fully discharged reads about 6 volts.

Is that what the jacks on the peak charger are for? So that I know a
battery hasn't falsed peaked?

Would a false peaked battery then read less than 9.6 volts?

PS: BTW....I'm charging sub c 6 cell packs.

not necissarily. Very old batteries have extremely high resistances. The
bulb discharger should stay attached untill the pack reaches 5.4 volts, or
..9 volts per cell on a 6 cell pack. How bright are the bulbs when you call
the pack 'discharged'?

I let them go out completely then take the bulbs off the packs.

I haven't got around to making my own bulb discharger yet, but maybe taking
one bulb off the series would allow you to discharge to 5.4 volts? I guess
it's not THAT important.

You can get the pack down to .9V/cell, but taking the bulbs off and
letting the pack sit, the packs voltage does rise back up.

FWIW, I'm using unmatched packs.

I just want to know if my using voltage readings, druing charging, helps
to understand whether a pack is fully charged and not falsed peaked.

Oh! Well sure! The expensive chargers have Negative Delta Peak and Zero
delta Peak detection. That's a fancy way of saying that
1) for NiCds the voltage will rise until the charge is full and then fall
again. Negative = falling. Delta = change. So it's falling voltage that
indicates a full NiCd.
2) for NiMHs use zero delta peak. The voltage will rise untill the pack is
full and then completely level off or will just barely fall by a few
hundredths of a volt. Look for unchanging charge voltage for a full NiMH
pack.
