As a beginner that can hover, but not yet do nose in etc, I was thinking of
getting one of these, but was wondering if it really helps, i.e. you learn
to fly with its help, then have to learn all over again without it?
Also I presume you would need an extra channel to control it? I only have a
6ch Sanwa Supersport, so presume it would not work with this?

Wy can you use it with a 6 channel transmitter? If your using the 6th
channel to set the gyro gain let it unused and fit the gyro gain
manually and connect this free channel to the co-pilot gain. I´m sure
this device will help you a lot and will save more than its price.
Enjoy

Well Anthony, I'm selling mine - might save you a few quid (if you are in
the UK). I only used it for a couple of flights and decided against it for
reasons already expressed here further up this thread.
Have a look at it if you like:

Much as I'd really like one of these I've gotta buy a heli first :-)
Currently saving for a house then comes the heli.
