View Full Version : Possible gyro problem?????

Hi group,
I've had my heli for a while now and only recently managed to join a club
close enough for me to actually do some flying.
Anyway, the problem I'm having with my heli is that the nose keeps wanting
to drift to the left, and sadly it's not due to the wind.
It's had about ten tanks through it so far and this problem as only started
on about the last four or so. The guy who is keeping an eye on me while I
learn has had a look at it but was just as beat as I am. We thought we'd
cracked it by increasing the gyro gain but only two tanks later it's come
back. The problem appears to get worse as time goes by. At first I just need
to adjust the trim and then when the trim is maxed out I can put about 75%
right rudder in just to hold the thing straight.
It's a Shuttle Z-TS with a CSM ICG360.
Any advice on this problem would be appreciated.

Send it back to CSM for repair. I had an ICG360 that started doing that &
they replaced the sensor - cost me about £30 altogether I think but that was
quite a while ago.

Thanks for the reply Nick.
Is this a common problem with the 360 do you know, or anyone else?
Like I said in my original post, it's only had about ten flights in all.
Even though it's only had these few flights is it even worth considering
this as an upgrade opportunity, or is the 360 suffice for now?
One other question, if I do send it in for replacement have you got any idea
how long they take to do this job and get it back to you? Because I've only
just started I don't really want to lose all the hard work I've put in so
far.
Cheers

CSM do an upgrade option. Contact them and you can upgrade the 360, by
sending it off to them and paying a bit for the 400/540/420 or 560.
Doubt they'll repair the 360, as they don't make it anymore.

That's not what he said to me. I asked about upgrading my 540 to a 560 and
he said: "No. What are we gonna do with a 540?"

I've just had a reply from CSM tech support in which they say that if my
gyro cannot be repaired I may exchange it for either an ICG400 for £40 or an
SL420 for £60 + a return postage of £5.
They also went on to say that testing usually takes between 1 and 2 weeks
but it depends how busy they are. But they're usually pretty busy at this
time of year.
With me only just getting started an all, I don't really want to be grounded
for too long, if at all, and end up losing all the hard work I've put in so
far.
So I'm now asking you guys (hopefully with enough experience) for advice on
what you think I should do next.
Cheers

Hi Steve,
I sent a 180 back to csm for repair earlier in april (damaged sensor caused by crash).
Cost about 20quid to get fixed and the gyro was sent back packaged as new with a bundle of sticky pads
and the plastic screwdriver.
Don't think it was away for more than a week. I've found CSM tech support to be very helpful
I guess the sooner you send it off the sooner you'll get it back. esp if you are offered an upgrade
instead of repair.
good luck.

Or even a JR 500T and suffer the indignity of not being able to do a simple
piroutting figure 8 if there's ANYTHING like a wind about.
Or get a 540 and never think about wind again. Better still, get an SL560
and never even think about any farting about with trim levers on
transmitters.

Hang on there everyone, all of a sudden the gyro is having a problem?? I
don't think so!!
Weather changes, speed, pitch, wind, all affect drift. Have you checked the
linkages for any movement? Have you even bothered to mechanically adjust for
the drift to see if it is the gyro?
You say you've only recently started flying, has anyone taken a look at your
heli at the field?
You'll save yourself lots of heartache by checking everything else before
sending the gyro back for repair.
Where are you, we'll have a look no problems.

I'm hoping that I'll get some free time either this afternoon or later in
the weekend, to go through the gyro setup again.
We've checked over the linkage and there's no wear or change. I know it's
not the weather because it will turn into and out of the wind, with no
sideways drift it has got to be rudder input.
I'm not feeling too optimistic about the outcome of the re-setup of the
gyro, as it's all been done before why should it all have changed?
I'll let you know what we find.
