Hello all,

I'm a novice to the hobby. Infact I'm only just managing to get the heli off
the ground and into a kind of hover.

However, I'm having a problem, when my engine gets up to speed and just
starts to lift off it seems to lose all its power, sometimes the engine just
slows down and then I can lower throttle and try again. Other times the
engine loses power and then cuts out.

Even as a novice I know this isn't supposed to be happening.

Your comments will all be gratefully received.

Its probably your main needle settings.

Watch the smoke, does it get more or less as you increase speed? If it
increases, then wind the main needle in a couple of clicks(sixteenth of a turn)
and try again. Repeat until something changes.

If the smoke decreases, then wind the main needle out a couple of clicks.

If you can't tell, then just wind the needle out quarter of a turn, and try
again. If no improvement, wind it in half a turn and try again.

If that doesn't work you will have to look for blocked or split fuel lines etc,
maybe change the glow plug.

You'll get there...

Sounds like your engine is going lean. Open the main needle anticlockwise
about 1/4 turn and try again.

Hello Honest John,

Similar situation happened to me as I'm just getting started. Maybe it
applies to you also.

I built a JR Venture 30 with a JR 8103 and an OS 32 SX-H. Set everything up
by the manual. The manual included how to set up my particular radio to this
helicopter. Spent hours trying to get it as exact as I could. Went out to
fire the thing up and it got light but not airborne. Leaned it out a little
more and it got a little lighter but not airborne yet. Leaned it out just a
touch more and it finally got a foot in the air. Of course not knowing how
to hover I set it back down and the engine quit. Too damn lean, very hot and
smoked a plug. Well, I thought this engine is a gutless piece of crap,
barley got the heli in the air and it was doing everything it could. Long
story short, I drove a couple of hours to get together with a fella that's
been flying for years. Had him take a look at it. He also had a head tach.
My head speed was up over 2000 RPM. Didn't mean anything to me, but he said
for learning and hovering it would be better at around 1550 so all he did
was increase the pitch in the blades about 4 turns on the control rods that
go from the seesaw arms to the blade holders. He may have played around with
the throttle and pitch curves a little too. But now I'm running just pukey
rich and the thing flies great and hovers at about 1/3 stick (throttle). Has
all kinds of power too. (Got a head tach on my want list!) Anyway, just one
of those things you don't know when your just getting started. Was 4 hours
on the road well spent!

Good Luck!!!

-Mark
