I own them all. The Nikko SeaTiger and the Megatech are really toys. Basically you just lean over the pool or fishtank and move around. You can go fwd, revers, down,up and spin by turning the motors on or off. You manually adjust the angle of the motors which makes the sub go down at various angles. My radio reception was crap. Neat but gets old really quick. The Nikko SeaWolf is actually a pretty neat Sub. You have a prop on the bottom and can descend straight down and yes is propo. The radio range is iffy and its slow but for $175 or so its as cheap as subs get. My ESC cost that much. Sometimes you can find a older model on Ebay. They are all the same and Nikko hasnt change a thing in 15 years but the colors.

petn, how about getting a quality 2ch radio from ebay, then making a sports-scale sub from PVC? It worked for me, and i'm havin great fun with it. Tha diving planes are opertaed by the throttle servo, and it looks really good when diving.

Petn, a PVC sub costs as much as a radio, plus about 10-15 bucks extra. My sub was really cheap coz for the nosecone I used the cone from a bit clone toy car, and the tailcone was from a small cone , the small type available at the sport sections of most departmental stores. The control surfaces were made of plywood, and linkage, etc. came from my junkbox. If you like building stuff one of thes make a quick fun project. They are far from operating like a scale 11-foot u-boot with all the bells and whistles but they do look good in the water, when trimmed well.
My sub uses a mechanical speed control, and the throttle servo also operates the diveplanes.
The advantage of my sub is full propo control, good range, at 5-feet it looks good in or out of the water, it's cheap, and some other stuff i can't seem to remember right now (i'm typing this at 4.33 am)
Sorry if i hijacked your thread, just sharing my two cents worth. I think if you want a fun sub you can play with in a pond or pool the nikko seawolf would be good. It can dive  like a real sub too!

You might also consider converting a static model to RC. Revell Germany has re-relaesed the old Renwal/Revell Andrew Jackson. I converted a similar model (Revell/Renwal George Washington) and published a how-to article in The SubCommittee Report. Go to subcommittee.com to find the issue # (I belive it might have been #41).
The recent Trumpeter 1/144 Kilo is another good candidate.
Also, Revell Germany is about to release a 1/72 Type VII.
PVC subs are OK, but nothing beats scale.
