I am thinking of getting an os 81 VR-M engine for my boat. (a 40" dumas cris craft triple cockpit barrelback)
I was wondering if it was possible to purchase a clutch and install it on this engine?
Do you have any recommendations?

The reason I want a clutch is to make it a bit more menuverable, and safer if brought near pets or children/bystanders.
Thanks
For your help

Your water cooling won't work with the clutch disengaged unless the boats big enough for a seperate water pump.

Thanks for your reply.
Buy the way, Do you think an O.S 81 VR-M engine will be a little too hot for a 40" barrelback boat? The price for an O.S. .46 VX with accessories is almost the same price. So I thought: "Why not get the bigger engine." But if it is going to be all over the place. Maybe I will regret it. But I am thinking I will just avoid maxing out the throttle.
Also, does anybody have an idea of how fast this will go?

I don't know the big OS engines very well, but I think a 45/60 would be big enough for scale speeds. Anyhow, power to spare is better than not enough. ;)

An OS 81 would definitely be too big/powerful for that boat, even the 46
would probably be too powerful. I would recommend a sport engine (rather
than a high performance one) of .40 or less. It would be better to use a
..25 engine. The maximum speed would probably be low to mid twenties but
would be limited by the stability and design of the boat.

I'm dropping an 18cc petrol into my 40 inch hull, but considering swapping
to a .40. The .40 came out of a 36 inch hull which was very fast but not
over the top. My choice of petrol over nitro is simply due to fuel price -
its a tenth of the cost. Of course it will be slower until I can afford a
monster Zen or something similar :D

Have a look here:

http://groups.msn.com/HYPERRTORQUEMARINE/clutchesampaccess.msnw

You may have to do some searching on the web - Hyperr Torque used to
be at www.hyperrtorquemarine.com but that link doesn't appear to work
anymore.

I've used one of the clutches on a 3.5cc marine engine with excellant
results.

Last known address for them was 4480 Wallace Rd, Santa Rosa, CA95404.
Phone 707-538-5945.

The also used to advertise in the RC Boat Modeler mag.

That is a great idea. I found a featherlite 18cc motor at walmart. I am going to measure it and see if it would fit. How fast does this go for you? Or how fast do you think it will go? Are you doing any performace modifications on yours?
I would like to add a clutch..
