View Full Version : My first shaft-start ever. today :D

Today, just 10 minutes ago, I did my first shaft-start ever.
It was on a Shuttle ZXX, and I'm used to belt-starting. Started the hobby on
pullstarting.
Man is shaft-starting reliable. During the starting period the engine gets
great speed, and when it fired up, it really fired up and stayed on secure
idling.
The belt has alwasy been like fishing, unhocking the tension as the engine
started to fire, sometimes it went dead again, sometimes caughing it up.
Boy is this great !

Hells tits. You get THAT excited about starting up a heli? I wish I was
you - I wouldn't even bother flying it :-))

Yeah, and the reason is that my main problem/issue with my heli's has always
been getting that damn engine startet, and then keeping it running. Latlely
I've gotten better tuning the engine as long as I could get it to start.
Dunno if you remember my "works in bench, dead in heli"-topic.
That problem nearly made me give up, but I came out stronger.
Yet, with beltstarting I usually had to give it a couple of minutes before I
got it started. Priming and fidling, Hydrolic-locking. Locking the belt.
Belt slipping and twisting. The as the engine started, I had to fasten the
belt to the fanscreen so that it wouldn't get caught in any gears.
Now I startet with clean tubes, glowadapter on, cranking the starter until,
wrooooom! And there it went.
It was just a lovely feeling.
Next thing must be autostart with a switch on the radio.

Hence why heli manufactures went to hex start and cone start.

That's how you start the turbine heli. BTW you can also get electric
start for glow engines here is but one example

Silly me that's for a petrol engine I should have given this link
http://www.hobby-lobby.com/fema.htm
It is intended for a plane but with modification it could also be done
for a heli.

Hmmm a nice idea, especially the mid air re-starts:o)
The only problem I can see with that is the size of the gear box/shaft
connection. I wouldn't think there is sufficient room, or more importantly
enough shaft length to accommodate that and the fan/ drive connection in
most helis.

Well, I meant it mostly as a joke when saying I'll go for autorstart, but I
know they're out there.
I think they require a 7.2V-pack, and the whole package would add some
considerable weight.
I'm satisfied with my Hex for the timebeeing.

Them cone starts were a fcuking nightmare. I had one leap out of the starter
cup and screw itself into my specs. It shoved the lens right out of the
frame and screwed it onto my face. (Hence the picture:-)))
I used to get on very well with belt starting, and the "trick" was to get
the starter and the pulley on the heli lined up perfectly (no twist and no
difference in height between the two) before you even THOUGHT of cranking.
Worked everytime if you did that, from 32 powered Shuttles to 4.5bhp OPS
61ABC's and everything in between.
And of course, holding your mouth right:-)

Hirobo once produced an on-board leccy starter for heli's. They probably
still do, and if they don't. I'd bet Vario do.
