Thanks to everyone who replied, both on and off list, to my questions. My
first test flight with the stick was on Sunday, and it flew like a dream
(slightly surreal, erratic and with unexpected twists and turns). Serious
lack of pilot skills. First non-glider that I flew, and I have about 2 hours
total flight time since starting this sport.
And yes, it was heavy. I was impatient and rigged up two old 1350 maH Li-Ion
laptop cells with my 30 amp esc just to see it go. In 30 minutes of flying,
landing, etc, never got it past roof height. All up weight 250 grams (8.8
oz). Perfectly suited to my flying skills: no elevator input, bang throttle
full on to go up at 1 inch per second, and basically just use the rudder to
keep away from the trees. Gently glide down at 80% power, flare slightly,
perfect landings.
Going to the higher ratio gearbox (IPS C), same prop, lighter esc, with 3
Li-Poly 700 maH, should give me a 1.7 oz weight reduction with 45% more
power, pulling about the same amps. I'll be happy with that.
Thanks again to all who helped,
Johan Beyers,
