I'm going to be visiting the bay area this weekend and should get a chance to fly Saturday afternoon or maybe Sunday. I live in Jackson Hole, WY, don't have anyone to fly with, and am completely self taught. I'm wondering where would be a good place to fly where there will be other people there I could learn from. I'd really like to see some DSing. I'll be staying in Mill Valley, so Four Corners would be easy to get to, but I assume that's a mellow, non-DS site. Would Shell Ridge be a good place to go?
Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,
Although I've never been to Shell Ridge I've heard good things about it. That would definitely be a place to check out for DS activity.
THere are a number of places along the coast that should be relatively close to where you are staying. Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the bay and don't know that many sites on the side where you will be.
I'm also going to see if we can't get a few DS people to respond to your post.
Hope you have a nice visit!

If you don't have any luck here, try the Dumpster's list at Yahoo! groups. Very active membership of Bay Area fliers and lot's of DS talk too...

Hope that helps,

Heya Frank,
I live in the area as well, and fly near four corners alot, actually about 10 minutes away from there is a great site on the coast with real good compression lift, friendly folks, but no DS. There are definately alot of sites to fly near where you are staying but like anywhere else it all depends on conditions, wind direction etc. Drop me a line, What planes will you have with ya?

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of bringing a Moth and a Bluto. I also have a beat up Maple Leaf Image that I could bring.
I'm assuming that afternoons/evenings are likely to have the best wind. Is that correct? Also, what are temps like? I know it can be pretty cold in Marin any time of year.
Thanks,
Frank

Weather can be freezing (Califonia style), 60F at the coast to boiling inland 100+F. If it's blowing good at the coast it will feel a lot colder.

I ended up at Shell Ridge, where I met Ron, Leegan (sp?), Doc, and Jeff. There was tons of lift. I flew the front side a bunch. I got some tips on landing that should help me a lot when I get hom. I dove my Bluto over the back a couple of times but nerves got the better of me. Some of the guys there were DSing, which was the first time I've ever seen it. Very, very cool.
I might end up back there tomorrow. My wife wants to see some DS, now.
Thanks again,
Frank
