Hi jchas26,
i'm not a big fan of guillows but you can make then fly.
i've built the hellcat a few times and it fly's great! i usually
sand all the formers and ribs down to make them about
1/32" thick and use my own strip wood. remove a bunch of
wood by scalloping between stringers and ribs, and build the
tail using all light 1/16" (preferably laminating but you can get
away with sheet tips as long as they're narrow.) hollow out
the fuselage once it's done and don't paint it (ok, maybe fog
on some floquil or polly-s paint.) i've gotten over one minute
flights easily with my hellcat's.

About 20 Sec On Avg .
Thunderbolt Is A Little More.
I Have been Building For Looks Up Untill Now. I Think I Want To Make Something That Will Stay Up For A While. These Guys Were Not Built To Fly, Just to Look At. What Do You Think Of Diels Kits? I Just Got The Shindin, But It Is A Fun Build An I Would Like To Maybe Start With One Of Those Kits.

hi,
20 seconds isn't bad. just to hit the basic's, here's some quick
idea's that you may have already done.
1. join a club! i'm pretty sure there's a FAC (flying aces club)
in N. Carolina but there may be one closer to you. You can
subscribe to the FAC newsletter for $15.00 (six issues) and
get nice plans and idea's. the address is FAC-GHQ, 3301 Cindy
lane, Erie, Pa. 16506. I also get the D.C. Maxecuters newsletter.
Look up Maxecuter on the net and see what they can do!
2. removable nose block so you can put in long lubricated motors.
3. buy a nice winder (hiline used to have one, they probably still
do) and streeeeetch those motors while winding!
4. be prepared to build new planes. i destroy mine on a regular
basis following my own advice!
Diels kits seem nice, i've got a few but i've alway's thought
they seemed heavily designed. i've never built one because of
that. i've found that building from plans allows me to use the
light wood i want and are designed by guys that want them to
fly. i really like blowing up peanut plans to ~18" then i know
i can really build them light! some other nice kits are the
Golden Age Reproduction kits. You may be able to find that on
the net as well. If not, i can alway's look up the address.

I Have An Order Form For Golden Age. Any Suggestions on A Good Flyer? Also, A Good Source For Balsa. My LHSs Only Carry Midwest

i've seen the p-51 flying as well as the boulton paul defiant.
my favorite would probably be the heinkel 112 but it has an
inverted gull wing. I've got the Don Srull plan blown up to around
18". it's built and covered with gray chalked tissue. so far it only
weighs 11grams but i still need a prop and canopy. the me-109
looks good as well. i buy my balsa from Lone Star Balsa. they
have a web page you can order from but i usually call and ask
what they have in the 4-6lb range. Riley Wooten runs Lone Star,
he designed the control line combat Voodoo! I hear Superior has
nice wood as well but i've never ordered from them.

WOW! Those looks great for Guillow kits! And 20sec isn't too bad if they're rubber powered! Perhaps go electric with a few and they might actually stay up there for a while! Wow, none of mine'll ever look that good. I've got a Super Cub coming soon, but it might be electric powered. I'm not sure, because I still need to find some low capacity batteries and a small micro switch and charging jack. Anyone know where to find 50mah to 100mah cells for not too much? I'll be using an N20 4.8V, so I think I need 4-5 cells. (Or would a small capacitor work?) Thanks!

I Have Never Tried Electric FF. Might Be Fun. I Will Have To Do Some Reading On That. I Have A Diels Sinden in The Works Right Now. I Will Post Some Progress Pics. I Also A Finishing Up A Guillows Mustang And Typhoon. They Seem To Be Much Lighter Than The Others.

I would send the order to Lone Star and have them select the weight and grain. It costs you an extra 30% or something but you get good wood that way. Having said that I went to their factory and hand picked some wood from the regular stock and got some real good stuff. Most of what I was discarding was good 7-8lb on ave and some much lighter. I picked up a 1/2" thick sheet to put around my thinner purchases and when I got home found out that the 1/2" piece was 4.2lb! Wish I had bought more.

Hi Jchas26
Your Guillow's hangar is impressive! I haven't built it yet but have been told that the 'Stang is a decent flyer. I am currently finishing up a Chipmunk. The appropriate phrase should be "repairing". I am trying to trim it out.
Thanks for sharing the photos

The Mustang Flys OK, The Best One is By Far The Typhoon. With That big Scoop It Practically Balances Itself Lets See That Chipmunk!:D

So far, the 'stang is the only FF plane I've had that's really done anything for me. Probably because I'm real good at building things halfway and then getting side-tracked! Oh well. Keep us posted on the Typhoon!

Wow, Jchas thats the biggest Guillows collection I've ever seen. Very nice.
What did you use for covering on them?

Jchas26
Jul 06, 2003, 01:27 AM
They Are All Straight Out Of The Box.The Only Mods I Did Were Toothpicks For Cannons, Guns, Pitot Tubes, Etc... And On The Warhawk I Carved Landing Gear Pods Out Of Blue Foam. Hope You Enjoy. I Will Be Wrapping Up My Mustang(Short Fuse Sallee), Shindin, And My Typhoon Very Soon. I Have Also Been Cutting Parts For Focke Wulf TA 152. The Electric R?C Bug Has Just Been Upon Me A Great Deal Lately What With SEFF And All. I Have A TON Of Plans To Sort Through. I Think The P-38 Will Be Next Since I Have Blown Through All OF The 17-18" Guillows WW2 Birds.
If Anyone Has Any Detail Suggestions I Would Love To Hear Them.

Here is my brick that I built this weekend. The only modification is that I used Japanese tissue instead of the Guilows stock tissue. I thought it would be a good flier until I had to add 10 grams of lead to the nose for balance (all up weight is now 1 ounce). It does fly, but the rubber motor included in the kit only runs 4 seconds, so the flight time is around 6 seconds. It is stable in flight, flies about 150 feet, and glides OK, so I may try a longer rubber motor soon. With all that lead in the nose it probably would weigh the same as an electric FF or RC model!

Looks good Steve. This one should be a flier. If you want to get some more duration, get a quantity of 1/8" wide tan II (now out of production or Tan Sport). About 25% of the weight of the model is a good quantity of rubber to start with. Maybe about an 18" loop. Put about 100 turns in the single stand before you tie it and it will "braid" nicely.

The rubber peg shown on these plans is always way to far back, but it will be tough to move it now without messing up your nice covering job. The problem with it back there (as I think you found) is that you end up adding some much weight to the nose that you lose any gain you get from increase motor runs. Give it a try though, it will probably do ok.

Also, lose the tiny prop they included in the kit an replace it with a peck prop of about 1/3 the wingspan. If you have to add nose weight, it might as well be doing something for you!

Good Luck!

Nick,

The Bird Dog is one of the Guillow 18 inch series, a circa 1967 design that is still available in most hobby shops. I was placing a large order to Tower Hobbies and after reading this thread I had them throw in the Bird Dog for $6.49, which is pretty cheap for most any kit these days. You can find all of the current Guillow line for sale at Tower.

Bob,

I will try the larger prop and upgraded motor.

Thanks,

Steve Morris

Steve,

Thanks. I've got one of their 17" Mustangs, and I have been looking for another to convert to electric, but haven't been able to find them anywhere lately. I'll definitely give Tower a look.
