Just have a look at these, brought to the club last night by a clubmate en route to a large model under construction and pored over in the car park at midnight. I happened to have my camera with me and couldn't resist a quick piccie.

These are a set of custom made scale retracts for a BIG Grumman F8F Bearcat (that's about a 5 inch wheel). The retracts have been manufactured by master undercarriage maker Ray Slack and are a work of art, replicating the full size mechanism.

Thanks for the help Brian. Those retracts are awsome looks like alot of work and design went into fabricating these. They are quite impressive. The Bearcat had unique landing gear, when they extended the struts actually moved in closer to the fuselage at the same time while rotating downward. From the pictures you can see how the designer/fabricater replicates this on his retracts. I would be cool if someone made smaller retracts like this for the Jim Ryan Bearcat, however, I don't know how often I would get to use these since I mainly fly at a grass field and it is pretty rough. It would be cool to do a flyby and extend the landing gear for scale looks. It would draw some attention. Anyway thanks again for the help, hopefully I will have more people finding my thread now that are interested in this type of aircraft and I can get some useful information and help from others that have built the JR Bearcat kit. I know that Jim frequents these threads and gives his opinions and ideas about building his kits and this info would always be helpful. Earl

I built a Ziroli Bearcat and made a simpler folding gear system which looks pretty good. There is an MPG if you want to see it work:
