Hello,
I just bought a complete system from a company that will remain nameless
until I find out how they are going to handle this situation. I bought a
venture 30 w/ OS32 & Maverick muffler combo. Ok all is well with that.
The strange part is that this same company offered a JR 8103 TX w/ 649G
mini RX with a Futaba 401 / 9253 as a radio, gyro, servo combo. The problem
is, the gyro wont pug in to the receiver!
Surely I'm missing something. Surely a company would not put together and
ship out such an expensive combo THAT WON"T WORK TOGETHER! So please,
somebody out there must know what I'm doing wrong. Please let me know what
I'm missing here. Thanks!

Dude, if you are getting this worked up about this little problem you better
take up stamp collecting. Because helis will have curled up in a fetal
position in no time.
Now, Futaba makes their plugs pilot proof by molding in a little tab. This is
so the plugs can be inserted only one way. JR is too cheap to do this.
Sooooo, get a knife, cut off the little tab from the gyro connector and plug
away.

Well there is more to this than I included in my original post. When I
placed my $1100 order, they told me everything was in stock and ready to go.
Since they offer free ground shipping, I waited the week for my order to
come in.
That's when I find out that the receiver was actually out of stock. My point
is had they been up front and told me this when I placed my order I could
have oh I don't know maybe ordered a Futaba system that might have been in
stock? So I wait another week for the receiver to come in.
So if I was going to have to jury rig this combo to get it to work, maybe
they could have also let me know that. If I cut this tab off the plug, will
it still be keyed? Or will I just have to flip a coin to determine which way
to plug it in?
Also, hard for me to believe that JR is "to cheap" to put this little tab
on their plugs. What's that going to actually save, a fraction of a cent per
unit if that. Oh, and by the way, with all do respect the JR plugs can only
be inserted one way also, they just key their plugs in a different way. I
find it much more likely that these manufacturers don't want you mixing
components like this.
So, "dude" thanks for your reply. Worked up? Nah. I just actually have to
provide the kind of service to my customers that this company (which I have
not named) claims to provide on their web site. I've been flying helis for 3
years and can't recall being fetal yet.

Too funny!
Hey, "dude", I don't mean to sound sarcastic (well, OK, maybe a little), but where in the hell
have you been flying helis for THREE years and not know about the Futaba/JR plugs issue?
Are you in a two member club with some exiled Monk on a mountain top in Tibet?
Either that or you are related to a certain Iraqi information minister . . .

Futaba to JR . . . wire colors may not match.

You are a laugh a minute! LOL! As a matter of fact the wire colors do not
match. I would have expected a man of your vast experience and knowledge to
know that. And of course you know what colors on the Futaba gyro match up to
what pins on the JR receiver. All I'm saying is that if a company is going
to sell this as a combo, would it be to much to ask to maybe include a note
with info about this jury rigging and what colors to match to which pins?
That would probably be as unreasonable as actually getting some useful
information here at
rec.comedians.nohelp.rc.helicopter.

Cut off the 'thang' on the side of the futaba connector
JR wires are:
+ = red
- = brown
signal = orange
Futaba wires are
+ = red
- = black
signal = white
JR connections are slightly polarized, they have chamfers on one side
of the connector (not quite as strong right or wrong as the futaba
'thang' though)

Stop typing, open your eyes and try google.
We all owe you nothing, not information or congratulation, you are
welcome to phuck off or stay, you can ask of what you wish to know and
you may get an answer if you are in luck.
Fact, you dont know something, you dont know enough about that
something to start laying blame on others for it.
In short you dont accept that it is up to you to go forth and find the
answer to the something you dont know.
If this is the case then as it is stated, you are screwed and should
ponder as to are you cut out for this hobby.

Unless they've come to some sort of a standards agreement since I tried this
a few years back, JR terminals don't fit Futaba's "J" connectors properly
(and vice versa). Give it a try and let us know, though.

You are correct! Even the pins aren't compatible with the plugs. Sheesh.
It
does look like if I bevel the corner that matches the "slanted" corner in
the RX connector, I can make it so it will only plug in one way. What a
bunch of nonsense.

Since obviously they did it just to irritate you personally . . . .
I'd say they were pretty successful . . .
From what I can see, you got the correct answer in the very first response to your rather . . .

Yep, they don't make it easy. Don't worry too much about preserving the
polarity keying when you shave the Futaba connector. Just make sure that
your colors match (black->brown) when you plug the gyro into the rx.
Afterall, you're not going to be plugging and unplugging it on a regular
basis. Maybe one day someone will make an after-market "Futaba J-less"
connector...

Well there is an adapter available, but if you add another mechanical
connection of course that just adds more potential for problems.

Actually, someone does make 'adapter' pig tails.
At least they used to. If they are still available, then it would be proof that there are
actually people anal enough to buy them.
OK, the truth is, if shaving the tab off and beveling the edge of the Futaba connector to plug
it into a JR receiver (like everyone in the free world does) will leave an irreparable dent in
one's karma, there are several vendors who sell empty connector housings, pins and even the
proper crimp tool so that a brand new JR plug can be installed on the Futaba wires.
That is assuming there is no violent 'rejection' between a Futaba wire and a JR pin.

No pigtails. I'm thinking of a hybrid connector housing that would accept
Futaba terminals but be keyed to JR. No cutting, crimping, or soldering
required - just pop off the Futaba J connector and replace with the new
connector housing. Click, click, click.

C'mon Steve - can't we play nicely without name calling? If such connectors
were sold in packs of five for a couple of bucks, I'd buy them. I'm sure
most of us would. It's no more anal than shelling out $50 for anodized
servo horns, buying a governor to precisely regulate your head speed, or
feeling weak in the knees and sick to your stomach because your tx is only
PPM. How many of these compulsions are you guilty of? Let's face it, we
all do things that others might view as excessive - it's the nature of our
hobby.

Flippin 'eck Beav you don't do you? How do you cope with moving servos from one

What about warranty, doesn't that affect it?
And you must have faith in your soldering..mine is so crap my best efforts
