How do you tune a tuned pipe?

I built a run-up stand of sorts, but the pipe seems to hot to tune "on
the fly" at max throttle. Do you try to slide it in and out while
running or is there a better way?

I have to remove my hatori pipe to get to the engines idle screw. and
sometimes I do it when it's ticking over (loud!!)

Try wearing welders gloves or (as I do) a rag around the pipe.
