Currently building a Caldercraft 'Talacre' Bought it 5 years ago, started it and then shelved it until last week. Hope to get it done before I run out of energy!

Well if it turns out anything like this one it ought to look great when you get finished.

Yup, that's the boxtop picture; I have it on the wall by my workbench as inspiration. I'll try to get around to taking some pics of the model as it is and log my progress.

Actually she sailed 3 weeks after construction. The T103 is one of the few ships that is actually finished. :p There should be images in the build up thread.
Here are some of the best ones.

Holy cow Kmot! That is a long list!
I just added my Mister Darby and Foss Pacific Escort to e-bay because I can not see myself getting started on any of those boats for the next year.
I have a Robbe Survey Vessel Norderney that I will try next. I like to build in the winter and enjoy the boats in the summer.

Umi...
The hole came prefabricated from Harbor Models. All you had to do is drop it in. The hull was built up around opening and reinforced.I heard they put out quite a bit of thrust.
The sad thing is that as I have the two boats listed I continue to look at the other boats for sale. I am addicted. :D

Marty, I already saw your boats on ebay. If you lived in my area, one would probably be mine by now. But, I don't trust shipping companies anymore because of past experiences.

This is a 1 1/2"= 1'-0" model of Ernest Gann's 35' trawler yacht STRUMPET. The model was started by my friend Rodger but when he passed away from cancer, his wife and parents gave it to me to finish and I said I would as a memorial to Rodger. The model is scratch built from plans from the Benford Design Groups book SMALL SHIPS. Jerry J

Pusar, Timing is my enemy. If I hadn't just got my Cape Islander Hull and accessories I would buy the Foss Tug. As it is my budget is flat for a bit. I looked at both boats on EBay. Anyone that buys either of them will be getting a good deal. You do excellent work. Good luck on your auction.
Take care,

Here is another model of a boat built by Monson Boats and went to Lake Tahoe CA. I built the plug for the hull, pulled a mold and laid up several hulls which I used to model several of their boats. Jerry J

These are a couple of models of some fast ferrys being built in Tacoma. The larger is a 1/24 scale model of a 65' fast ferry. The smaller is a concept model of their new 85' fast ferry. The larger ferry is currently being built at 85' to make it competitive with other ferrys of similar size.

Jeepers, The marine patrol boat is 28" long, radio controlled with a Graupner inboard/outboard stern unit. It is pretty scale looking but I don't know how long it will run as I think it uses a flex spring to get around the corners. Jerry J

Hi Jerry:
Nice boats - very clean! Where do you find the belt drive components? I'm always reminded of how loud my boats are - that may be worth a look at.

May 06, 2006, 11:44 PM
Mike, nice to hear from you. I guess my first message didn't get posted so will try again. I bought my belt drives from a electronics surplus store in Portland, I bought all they had about six pairs. I keep looking when I get back there but haven't seen any more available. You might go do a google search for electronics surplus and see what you can find. You can also go to the origional suppliers and get their parts but they can become quite pricy. I also look at the thrift stores and find old computer printers for $8 to $10 dollars and just take them apart for the belts and motors and switches. Let your local computer store know you are looking for parts and many times they will let you have them for the taking to keep from paying to get rid of them. Keep your network going and see what you can find. Jerry J

Right now I'm working on a scratch built 1/128ish R/C predreadnought BB11.A long time ago I found a fiberglass hull that I "thought" would be fairly easy to convert for my model.WRONG!!Because of this, the project was put on hold, but now I've come to a conclusion.I will build this ship the best I can with this hull and if it isnt perfect...so what.I've wanted a r/c predread for soooo long I wont mind if someone says "hey, the armor belt isnt right" or some other rivet counter crap.It will look good from 10 feet and after all thats at least how far you normaly are from a R/C boat anyway.
My last boat before the BB11 was a Vac U Tug and the next ones I do in order will be:
1/350 Lusitania
Sterling 50'Chris Craft Catalina
Work on my RR layout

Absolutely great work on the trawler.
Even though the work on my scratchbuild 1:8 scale LNVT is not complete, work starts on a Newport 12M in about a week. Deck will be made from Bubinga. EC12 will continue to be the work horse.

We had to upgrade the electronics and use a 2 channel futaba attack to get the range we wanted.
I think I only have 7 boats, another one is not mine, but is just visiting...
but the number can change everytime I get inspired... This group is dangerous.
No more boats no more boats no more boats... Maybe a submarine... :p
I suppose you want to see the insides of the tank.. :p

ooby, where in the NW do you live? I live in Olympia. I tracked down the new owners on the east coast. Capt. Ott and they sent me updates of what they have done to Strumpet since they bought her. I have made some changes myself like alternate decking, extended the brow on the house and updated most of the electronics to what a new boat would have. I'm thinking I will call it Strumpet Too or Strumpet II, I don't know yet. Jerry J

Those timing belts and pulleys and tons of other stuff can be found at http://www.sdp-si.com if you don't want to raid photo copiers for parts.
As for what is on the ways, well I'm going to have to take a break for a while. Yesterday I was working on building a bedroom for my oldest son in the basement and I got a nail shot into my right hand from the nail gun. It shattered my index fingers knuckle at the palm.

We live in Olympia but have another place in Allyn. Send me your e-mail address to jbjulian@comcast.net. Your sailboats look great. Do you sail with the Gig Harbor group? I have a 50-800 that we modlified from a Stollery design and a Huson 36-600. I sold my Vortex Soling, Regatta and an open class boat that just took up to much space. I have always wanted to build a multi-hull but that will have to wait for another time. Jerry J

Don, Tim,
I've had other things hurt more but this is one is up there with them. I'm just glad that surgery wasn't needed to get the nail out, I hate hospitals and doctors. They are good for one thing though, Vicodin ES. As for recovery time about 4 to 6 weeks.
Tim,
Pager vibrator motors are nice and small, is that what you are wanting.

I am building a barge to pull & push for the tugs I've built I need practice for the regatta.
I found this drawing on one of the threads in here, this forum is the best for info. on just about everything.
The barge is 24" long and 10" wide, 1/48 scale witch will match my tugs in scale. It's made of mahogony so it will be heavy before I add ballast, I haven't thought of what to hall with it, or finish it as a portabel full dock.
Suggestions would be appreceated
Thanks Roger in Washington

Hate to admit it to starting the Dumas double kit since the Calypso is still sitting only about 2/3 finished. So easy to get started on something new, so hard to get momentum back on something stopped....

Yep Dan, that is why I torture myself with my sort-of-new rule of 'one project on the workbench at a time'- it doesn't stop me from buying too many kits, my rule is just one work in progress at a time, start to finish! :o
My now dormant static plastic model building effort is littered with half built models that will never see completion... :o
I now use the anticipation of starting a new project as motivation to finish the last "10%" of a current project! :)

Thank God It's not just me then that stops a build and starts a new one. I just get hung up trying to figure out how much or what I want to add to the model to keep going.
I guess that is why the 2 Pats we have on these forums are so good at what they do. They persue to the end a build then start an new one. I need to start doing this as well

ropanach, since the barge is small, it would make a great crane flat. It should be easy to find a crane near 1:48 scale. Dicast Direct is one place that has cranes. http://www.diecastdirect.com/default.asp?c=True
You can also shop around for a Lionel crane at model railroad shops.
Here's some examples of crane flats. Also you could use a deck crane like in the bottom photo. Harbor Models has them.

For quite some time, I've been planning a catamaran hulled fire boat in 1/24th scale. I got the idea from wathing the film "The Abyss". Near the end of the movie, they show the twin hulled reasearch vessel. I sort of liked how the twin hulls looked. I figure I can place a motor and large battery in each hull, and build some sort of daughter boat ramp in the center near the rear of the superstructure. I'll probably go for a 50 inch length, with a 18 inch beam. At first I was going to purchase two FH hulls of a Greenville Gunboat, but will probably have to design and build my own plugs (military hulls are just too narrow). I have all the power and control parts, plus the Robbie monitors and pumps. All I have to do is start the build (and locate a ACE RC 7 Channel for cheap).
Right now, I've been wasting time (and money) trying to get a surface effect hull to work. Each attempt has sunk, or fried the electronics. Can't get enough power to raise the hull, and when I do, its so unstable, the electronics get sixed. I think I'll change hobby to doll house construction.

Nice, are you going to be able to drop the bouys and run the crane and diving bell?
Someone had me start one of the early ASR's the USS Florikan.
It's the boat that is here "visiting"
The guy ran off delivering vehicles around the country, and I haven't heard from him for nine months.
I called him about radio equipment and how I planned on making the crane work, and he wanted to hold off due to funding. Apparently he bought a car carrier so that he could deliver more than one vehicle at a time, and the gas prices are killing his income. :(
So it sits here the ways, ARR, waiting for funding to be approved.

Hey Wing, thanks for posting that photo. I was at Miami library last month, and going through their collection of Janes books for ideas. But I do believe I'll have to build my own plug for the hull. I figure with a total beam of 18 inches (minus two six inch wide hulls), the six inch wide open area between will be enough room for the daughter boat and launching mechanism. But like any builder, everything always looks better during the imagination phase of construction.
As for CFD, thats Chicago Fire Department. I model their equipment in 1/64th and 1/43rd scale. I also do diecast in 1.43rd for Pensylvania State Police (PSP), and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

I'm still ripping and stripping the Bristol Bay, and marking out my Lobsterboat, but have already started to dream....
Here are two of the boats I'm considering as my "next project" --
The colour photo is of a Steam Drifter, 93' long, and is taken from a back issue of "Marine Modelling".
The line drawing is of a "Strath Class" Steam Trawler, 123' long.
Whichever one I finally decide to build will be constructed in 1/24 scale....!
