All you're looking for is a big notch/ledge in a big slope. For example, a highway cut into a hillside. If you stand at the front edge, you'll feel the wind blowing in your face. If you walk back across the road you'll feel the wind stop or even coming the opposite direction (mini rotor). What you do is make turns in and out of that calm air above the road almost parallel to it, and if you can angled down the slope just a little to get maximum airspeed gain as you pass out of the calm air back into the upload air.

It never builds up the kind of energy backside DS does, but it is occasionally useful just to pick up a little altitude with a turn or two. I usually find it easiest to stand at the very back of the road/ledge and make the turns right in front of me, instead of relying on my depth perception to keep me from pounding it into the hill standing on the edge.
