View Full Version : Which plane is good for 8x2400 Nicad?

I have a Twinstar which I use the 8x2400 packs. I don't want a Twinjet. I am looking for a sport/arobatics plane which I can use my 8x2400 packs. I would like to use the Phasor 30/3 or the 15/4 brushless motor. Any suggestion? I would like to have good vertical, loop from level, enough power to perform most maneuvers. I was told the Phasor 30/3 will need 10 cells to give good performance. Is it true? I would really want to stay with 8 cells only.
Thanks
Don

You're talking about getting a brushless setup ($$$). Cost of a couple of additional battery packs shouldn't be that much extra.

Why not try one of the Balsacraft WW2 planes like the Hurricane, Spitfire, Sea Fury etc. I fly a Hurricane with 8x2400 batts and a neodym motor, flys very well

Hi Don
My first thought would be that two of them side by side would make the likes of a Sig Four Star 40 go real well :)

8 cells - the venerable ElectroStreak is probably the best game in town here, as it is light enough to do fairly well on lower power. It's a "loop and roll" machine really - won't knife edge and so on, but is a good flier and pretty aerobatic.

Considered going ten cell? If you have enough packs, just rebuild them - that's the way I got into ten cell systems and they are way more fun than eight if you want aerobatics. Don't limit yourself for trivial reasons.

An 8x2400 pack is a good power source for many geared Speed 600 applications in a 40"-50" winspan weighing 40-50oz.

The power train I came up with for my 8x2400s (which are also used in a Twin Star and a Twin Jet) was a Graupner S600 BB SP 7.2 with 2.8:1 inline gearbox and CAM 10x8 folder. This pulls a 4 ch. 1.6M model around with great authority and gives 15 min+ flights :)

You can do everything you are asking for and more with and elecrostreak and the Jeti 15/4. Mine was powered by 8xrc2400 and it would do consecutive large avalanches, nearly two vertical rolls, and continuous aerobatics for nearly 10 min.

Unfortunately, the fuse was cracked in half when it plowed into the ground Sunday (fly-away, radio failure). I liked it so much that I will not only rebuild it, but may get a second for backup.

What Leonard and Dereck said "get an Estreak".
Better yet get two like Leonard !! You can build a Toyota with a Magnetic Mayhem and/or a Mercedes with a Jeti 15/4 :D .

While at the NEAT fair I picked up a kit from Dymond (ARF really) called the Rumfal. Glass fuse, balsa sheeted foam wings. It is a bit larger than the Electrostreak and should go real well on 8 cells.

I'll have it finished this weekend and let you know. The 30/3 is a good motor but on 8 cells it uses a pretty large prop. I've got one on 8 3000 Nimh's in a Parabala hotliner spinning an 11*6.5 folder @ about 32 amps.

I use a Jeti 30/3 with 8x 2400s in a 48" aerobatic model and it flies great! The model is a JB aviation Minisport, mine is a converted glow model but they're bringing out an electric version.
You can see mine on the gallery or see the glow version at

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will check out the Estreak. I don't want to rebuild the packs because I need them in 8 cells format for my Twinstar and Voyager heli. I may get a couple of 10 cells packs for my Voyager later. Right now I have seven 8 cells packs which I hope to use on one other arobatics flyer.

Don,

I have a couple of 8 cell subCs that are used in the Electrostreak (recommended - if you don't mind the build), but the plan is to use them with a connecting lead in the 16 cell 4*40 - or you could go even more powerful with a pair of connecting leads. I will slow charge the packs as a pair before I use them in "anger".

Talking of building the ElectroStreak, I found this image today and couldn't resist trying out another new feature:

Some might suggest that I should have left it uncovered ;)

She's a beauty John !! I once built one with a white body and clear Monokote wings and tailfeathers. I wanted to show off the built up structure [and my tidy construction] ...problem was ....couldn't see it very well. After a crack-up or two I put transparent blue Monokote on the wings and tailfeathers :)
My current Estreak is a test bed for the new CP1700's. 10 of these [weigh the same as 8-2400's], an Aveox 1015/1.5Y geared 2:1, APC 10X5 "E" prop really snatch her around ....even at 47 oz :D

Thanks Ed, and yours really looks neat.

Along with the house move (we just missed another target date that we were given :( ) I'm looking at 10 1700s or 2000NiMh, and the 2000s are 1oz lighter than 10 2400 NiCds - it's got to be the way to go. Although the individual cells are readily available over here there seems to be very little in the way of made up packs; I suspect that will change for next season. I did find some old brass bar in my other workshop so a hammer head bit should not be a problem.

I'm not in the "7 cell trap" (tm), or even the "10 quid trap" (my tm!) - a dogged insistence on using cheap Chinese ferrites, though I suspect I got caught in the "brushed trap" by buying too many brushed ESCs - then there's my motor collection  I was going to use the Velkom 24/16 DD on a 10x6 or 9x7, but the 24/12 is starting to look quite promising DD on 10 cells with a load of around 8x4 near 30 amps. MotoCalc does appear to under-rate the 24/12 compared to real life.

BTW, It appears to me that if I go to 10 CP1700/2000NiMh on the Streak then it's going to save me the bother of building an EMBAT ;)

Best regards, John

Hi John,
My experience with the NiMh's indicate that if you use them you need to plan on one more cell than the equivalent Nicad pack as the sustained voltage they give up is lower. I'm loving the CP1700's and suspect you will to :) .
I have a Velkom 24/10 but got caught in the "Baby Aveox" trap after trying the 1015/1.5Y. I would be very interested in hearing about the 24/12 or 24/16 on 10 cells ..... as you say.... it could be an Embat killer (price wise). The skimpy rudder on the Estreak will keep it from performing like the Embat ..... otherwise it is a better looking model ( the Embat fuselage is fat by comparison, and it has a "stubby" nose ).
Best to you,
Ed

Hi Ed,

I'm on the verge of ordering the CP1700 from Germany at less than £2/cell (the option appears to be made up 10 packs at £38/pack + s&h). A Weller 40 is £17 from the bottom of the road (they come in Tuesday), and I can make up a double end soldering bit this week.

Providing the move is delayed another couple of weeks I could be flying with the 24/12 and the 24/16 on 10 very soon (motor change takes 5 minutes)

Best regards, John

Hi John,
If you build your packs, 4 on 4 horizontal [end to end soldered] with 2 cells vertical at the end the resulting pack is exactly the same size ...and... 20 grams lighter than an 8 cell [4X4 brick shaped] pack of 2400's :D. My Streak weighs 43.5 oz with a 10 cell pack of CP1700's.....if I leave the gear off.
Best to you,
Ed
